I have experienced similar problems with Rockwool in the past. It was caused by insufficient drainage. It smelled like mold but I couldn't see any actual fungi. Also I had some salt buildup with a residue that looked like fungi at first. I would flush the rockwool with PH-adjusted water several times and add some h2o2 or calcium hypochlorite to the reservoir.

I wish you good luck with your grow op!

edit: h2o2, not h202. Sorry!

A lil h2o2 (hydrogen peroxide) will get rid of whatever it is a well as the smell along with a huge boost of oxygen to the roots! About 5-10 ml of 3% h2o2 per 16oz should do it....best if you can find the 35% found at beauty store or 29% found at hydro stores usually listed as an oxygenator and dilute to 3% because the 3% sold in stores is said to be stabilized with heavy metals...Ive used all in my organic growing and the all give amazing results!!!
