Fungus Gnats

Ok... so ive been searching for ages online for the best way to get rid of these and there are sooooo many different opinions on the issue that it makes it hard to choose what best to do...!!

Im growing in soil at the moment and im using a combination of gnat off, sticky traps and little cups of coffee placed in the growing area all to combat these pesky little fuckers.

The gnat off works ok... but its not 100%... i have some nilnat on order as well to try and get rid of the problem as i heard that works better than gnat off so im going to try a combination of the two of them together.

Im not keen on the sand idea as ive heard it stops oxygen from getting to the roots through the top layer of soil and then i would have to bottom feed them as well just to give them their nutrients.

I really have read loads and loads on this issue but i just want something that works - i heard that diatomaceous earth on the top of the soil works a lot better than the sand and im curious about beneficial nematodes to destroy the larvae.

They really have affected my plants in a bad way with yellowing of leaves and curling also.

Just want to know the best way to get rid of them for good!!!

If you add the sand there's no reason why you would have to feed them at the bottom, because the nutes will still flow down through the soil as you feed from the top. Yes it'll clog up your soil some, but not to the point that it'll hurt your plants. I had to do it a few months back(the gnats came with the MG soil I was using) and it worked great. The gnats were gone and the plants finished out great. Also, I used a long skinny probes to aireate the soil every so often, which gave me some peace of mind, even if it didn't help much(there was no way to prove it helped anything.lol). Anyway...if the gnats are bad enough, it's worth using the sand because it will work, and doesn't take to long to do so.(about 2 weeks and they were gone).

Ok man - i have seen loads of info on the sand technique including a good video on youtube but as per usual and is common on here there are conflicting opinions on whether it is a good idea or not...

If it works its worth a try as i hate the little fuckers.

im trying azamax, and with the first treatment ive noticed reduced numbers, im in DWC with a coco, silica rock, hydroton substrate, with drip-rings, so im providing an exelent meidum for the little fuckers to thrive in, im thinking adding the diatomaceous earth to my mix and see if that will be the secret key, i know it works wonders in soil gardens for all sorts of pests, i also am considering covering the tops of my containers....its a war, they really screwed up my last cut the buds just wernt as happy as they should have been. but hopefully another couple treatments with the azamax ill win my little war.

im tempted to try the sand technique but im worried about how to water them if there is an inch or so thick layer of sand on the top?... Like i say im trying everything gnatoff, nilnat, agrothrin powder on the top of the soil, sticky traps, coffee cups - its pretty clear that they have stunted my ladies this time round

Ideas?...

^If you do choose to use the sand, I recommend using alot less than an inch of it. All you need is enough to cover the soil, like 1/8" deep, or you'll run in to watering problems. It really does work though, I used it with great results. :)
