i have recently started growing hydro with an ebb 'n flow system! i finally got some hydroton (expanded clay pellets) to bury the plants in rockwool. but ever since i added some ferts to the water, a green algae or fungus looking layer has appeared on the top of the rockwool. should i cut this off or just leave it or treat it somehow?? i can take a picture later and add it :) wont be for a few hours until i get my cam back.

I've had it as well...i think it's algae...food grade Hydrogen peroxide 50% at 1mL/liter kills most pathogens and algae. Good luck.

Add to the fert water...and no i do not believe you can get it at the grocery store. I know that ebay sells 35% food grade H2O2...this is preety strong stuff not your over the shelf kinda stuff so don't spill it on your hands or anything. This is also why you use 1mL per liter. It also helps oxygenate your roots while killing the algae. Read this post regarding the same issue. Especially read Al B Fucts message is the 5th one down.

You probably won't find the 50%, horticultural grade in anything but a hydro shop. However, it's the most economical to use, especially if you buy in bulk. I get 25L jugs for about $120, lasts about 8-9 mos.

You can substitute weaker grades as found at pharmacies. 3% H2O2 should be used at 17ml/litre of tank volume. 6% at about 8ml/litre. If you have big tanks, this can get pricey. I have had someone around here also warn me about 'stabilisers' in the pharmacy grades which are said not to be good for plants. However, I have not confirmed nor denied this nor identified what these stabilisers might be. I have used pharm grades in a pinch in the past.

Good luck my friend
