General approach to selecting genetics when growing from seed?

Hi guys,
Been growing for a while with moderate success. I’m curious what y’all’s methodology is when deciding what stains to grow from seed, and how you go about selecting “the cut” of that strain. I’ve bought expensive seeds of what was supposed to be great genetics, but every time I get wild variation and it’s often been just pure luck I get one or two plants that exhibit exceptional structure/potency/yield/taste etc. Is this pretty much normal, and if so, are you pulling clones from everything so you can propagate a great plant when you get lucky? I have a small space and am pretty limited what I can do, but if there’s a trick I’d certainly be interested in hearing it. Thx

Id say regardless of price decent seeds you should find one or two good plants in a pack that is normal as for finding truly unique and special plants some call unicorn level they are far rarer but its luck you could hit one early or pop thousands of seeds to find it you should take cuts of everything and run it out twice before deciding what to keep and what to chuck if keeping cuts is your thing that way you can be sure also you can keep tiny mums in a wee box rigged up with a cfl or something if space is an issue as well and you just keep em small.

Thx man, kinda what I figured. I’ve heard some growers talk about certain traits to look for when culling seedlings early, but I’m not experienced enough to know what to look for. Just thought I’d throw it out there to see if there was some tricks y’all use when deciding what to grow out. I guess I’ll set up another space for veg and start cloning. I really enjoy growing but the club stuff around here now is just insane. Kinda reminds me of when I brewed my own beer until the craft beer craze hit. Makes it harder to justify the effort.

Unless you have extensive experience with a strain it is impossible to tell much from the seedlings. All plants need to be grown out to understand their properties. Also taking into consideration how the grow went. Was their issues? Did it grow great but the results weren't great? Etc lots of variables.

If looking to cut down on that you must do some research and see what strains you are interested in and then look for some completed grows and smoke reports. The ones that many people grow and like are better odds of producing a keeper.

It's well worth growing your own. You know exactly what is in the bud and where it came from. Also it should be better than anything you can buy. Never stop growing!!

If i find a keeper in a pack I reveg the plant an then take clones an carry on.

Thanks for the replies. Reveg huh? Never considered that. Certainly makes sense, I’ll definitely try that next time I fall in love with one of my girls. Super frustrated with my current grow. Out of 12 plants I ended up with 5 females, and 3 hermied on me. Didn’t catch in time. I swear I had them out for some grooming just a few days prior. Can’t believe I missed em. Still learning
