Germination question

Quick germination question. I usually germinate my seeds in wet paper towels and stuff, but when I was at the hydro store the owner and I were talking about germination and he was telling me to just put seed right into a jiffy pot and water it. Then in two days put it out in the sun and let it grow through the jiffy pot and then transport it to a larger pot.

I don't know if the specific name for the "pot" that I have is called a jiffy pot, because I Googled jiffy pot and nothing came up that looked like what I have. Basically it looks like a very small, and I mean very small pot about an inch and a half in diamter that is made out of spongy soil material. The material feels like soil but it's call stuck together. There is a small hole in the top of it where you put the seed. When done correctly roots are supposed to grow right out of the "jiffy" pot and then you transport it.

Anyways, my question is: can you really germinate in this? Also, assuming you do try to germinate in it, how do you know that it's going to germinate in two days. He said to stick the jiffy pot outside in 2 days, but really, what if it isn't germinated and you stick it out in the sun?

jiffy peat pods work fine but not always in 2 days. The amount of time just depends on strain, moisture, temp, etc. Just make sure you soak them down good before you begin. Seedlings love the sun, just keep them moist.

Yeah but a seed can germinate in one day or 5 days, yah know? And there is no way of telling if it is germinated or not unless if I take the seed out of the hole, and I don't think that's a good idea.

jiffy pots are a cruse if you dont use them right. make sure if you use this to tear off the bag before you transplant into soil. i remember someone with a 2 (or 3 month) old plant that they kept in a jiffypot in soil and the thing rooted through the fabric and he was afraid to tear the roots. the plant was like 4 in tall and looked like a 1 or 2 week plant and was root bound as hell
