The release of flavonoids means the plant is under stress, stressed plants mean lower yield and more smell, happy plants dont smell unless touched, theres no need to release turpines, aroma etc as all there energy being focused on there current stage of growth not generating defences etc.

I had the same issue. I used combat liquid ant bait. The Gnats drink the poison and die. I put it on the floor and on a shelf. They are small/cheap and it works on other insects too plus they take up little space.
