i walked into my room today and saw some gnats. these past few days i seen one or two of them, but now i seen a bunch of tiny ones laying on my floor dead.. i have my pots sitting in aluminum trays u put turkeys in and the gnats were dead outside the trays on the floor. what do you think i should do right about now spray neem+water all around the soil or hang no pest strip for 2 days only.. PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE ME A QUICK RESPONSE THANKS..

Fungus gnats are more an annoyance than anything. Severe infestations might be detrimental to seedlings and young plants, but mainly they just eat organic matter and fungus in the soil and don't seem to affect the roots to any significant extent. They'll tend to get themselves stuck in the trichomes of the lower buds, so it is best to avoid them during flowering.

Prevention is best. Yellow sticky traps are indispensable for soil grows, use both kinds: some hang from the ceiling or other places, some come on stakes you stick right in the soil. I prefer the Safer brand with the green plastic stakes; they set up easier/cleaner (you are less likely to get sticky shit all over your hands) and seem to be more efficient/ergonomically designed.

Bti - Bacillus thuringiensis isreali is a natural bacterium that produces a larvacide which is toxic only to a handful of species of insect larvae including fungus gnats and mosquitoes. It is widely available in compressed circular pucks under the brand name Mosquito Dunks, sold in hardware stores all over.

Neem drench should kill adults, eggs, larva, etc. but I shy away from it as azadirachtins are broad spectrum fungicides and I am uncertain what it does to beneficial bacteria and fungus.

Pyrethrum is an excellent botanically derived pesticide that breaks down rapidly, it can be sprayed on soil surface to kill adults.

Gnats can easily be vacuumed. Rustle the pots a little bit to get them hovering above the soil surface and have the vacuum nozzle waiting to bring them to their sucky doom. Be sure not to snag a leaf, branch or worse in the process.

Beneficial nematodes, predatory mites and the Bti I consider to be the best for prevention and control. Those are all biological controls and are excellent for use in organics.

I would discourage the use of any 'no pest strips' in the grow room, don't know what kind of chemical vapors they put out but they can't be good.

I would recommend that with the Bti. The pyrethrum will kill the adults primarily, while the Bti attacks the larva which is key to breaking their reproductive cycle. It is best to use a method that will kill as many pests as possible in the early life stages, before they are able to reproduce.

thanks a lot for the info. i am gonna go with pyrethrum

WOAH BROH calm down dood you dont have that big of a problem go get some gonats or gnatrol it will handle it right quick. In the mean time use neem and water on the soil you can root feed neem look up for your brand its usually the same though. Spray the plants too like the above said its not too big a deal.

Pyrethrum while natural should be avoided if possible it is still a hardcore pesticide and can be harmful to your health i use it ONLY as a absolute last resort for a really nasty problem like spider mites that can rape a beautiful plant and turn it into bullshit in less than a week if its bad.

that's what i am trying to do now. i have two sticky strips hanging, and i just sprayed neem with water on top soil and all around the bottom part of the pots..

look up neem root feeding its an actual mix of it you pour on the soil not just pray on the top soil although spraying the top soil will help a lot. Gnatrol is business man rapes and pillages them bitches.

A quick fix is mosquito dunks(home depot or lowes).crush and sprinkle on top soil.If you dont treat em,the larvae will eat your roots.

I've got the same problem. I use 4 of the no pest strips and neem em. But I still see one everynow and then and they keep coming. I've been at war with them for time now! Resilient Bastards! I'de go with Gnatrol, because what Im doing just isn't totally killing them off.

yeah what gnatrol does for those of you who dont know is it kills the larvae and eggs first as soon as the gnats drink some of the water that has been "poisoned" with the gnatrol they can no longer eat or reproduce it fucks them hormonally supposed to completely rid an infestation within 4 days or so. I would say a week to be safe. But gnatrol is no joke the new formula they sell in powder form is fuckin the shit.

Gnatrol and Mosquito Dunks contain the same active ingredient (or bacterium, really). They are both bacillus thuringiensis isreali, or Bti. No word on if the Gnatrol is necessarily any more effective but the Mosquito Dunks are much more widely available.

Also, it is best to apply Bti in soil grows even if you think you don't have any Gnats, or especially if you have had them. This helps ensure that a population can't take hold to begin with.
