not relaly as soon as i plant but as soon as i put soil in any container in my bug free home (aside from 1 roach every few months) all of a sudden these tiny litle 1 millimeter tiny flying black bugs start flying around my room and i see at least 1 or 2 in my soils. the seeds were just planted ffs. are they attracted to the smell of the soil or something?? whats a good cheap weak but still effective pesticide to kill em off with?

i have an indoor grow with 150watt hps lamp, 40% humidity and 80-85F temperature

Sounds like root worms, or maggots, the flies u see are the adults and they do not eat ur leaves or anything. Hang a sticky strip for them. The worms like soil wet, so let it dry out between waterings, Ive heard a layer of sand on top of ur soil helps. A few wont hurt anything but a bad infestation wiil harm your plants LOL KEEP ON GROWIN

keep your hum like that and even if you dont do a thing i think youre not gonna have a big problem.go and buy some fly traps.better use something ecological for killin them.generally they appear when we overwater

the adults not a big problem but the babies are feedin themselves in the soil.let the soil dry and then when you water place some sand(not from the sea)on the top so that they dont come out.

I don't want to sound like a dick but this is exactly why I will never cheap out on soil again. Seems like any soil you buy from wal mart, lowes, home depot, or any local bs shop will be infested with gnats. Yeah they don't hurt your plants but they are annoying as hell. They never even really left my tent really as I don't have house plants or anything else to attract them but I hated them being in my clean home. I bought Fox farm ocean forrest soil and it never came with gnats or any problems. I regretted cheaping out and not driving the extra 30mins to get the good stuff. I hung white fly traps and covered the top layer of soil with play sand which did work well for a while but the lil fuckers will find some where to burrow. I am in the process of cleaning my whole room out now before I set back up just because of those lil assholes. :cuss:

Sounds like fungus gnats to me. Like rockweiler said, they may have just come in your soil. It's already been said, but here's my $.02: what I've done is hang sticky strips to get the adults, and let the soil dry out as much as you can without hurting the plants between waterings to kill off the babies in your soil. Personally, I've found the Hotshot NoPest things to be ineffective against these guys (but good for other pests).

I hate'em!What I been using is Natrol(not sure on spelling) In conjunction with bug strips it definately took it from a 10 to a 2.

well i have sta-green all purpose potting pix 0.13-0.04-0.09 that i got from lowes. besides lowes/walmart/homedepot/etc. where else do u get soil besides the internet?

and the one and only plant that ever sprouted for me, about 2 days after sprouting when it was 2 inches tall and had those 4 tiny leaves about 80% of 2 of the leaves suddenly dissapeared, upon closer inspection i noticed what looked like small bite marks and a brownness along the edges of the remainder of the leaves.
my gut told me and is telling me these little tiny black flying bugs must have ate it. but u guys are saying they dont eat so maybe we are talking of diff things. they are black, no visible wings, about a millimeter across and i usually see 1 or 2 drawn to the light of my monitor at night sometimes.
