Got damn gnats/fruitfly's in my soil HELP!

putting a couple inch layer of perlite on top of your soil works great. since a gnats life cycle is only 1 week, the perlite traps the live gnats in the soil and eventually they will die (when you let your soil get dry enough for them to be unable to survive) the ones that are outside of the pot wont be able to get through the perlite or sand (whichever you want to use) and they wont be able to lay eggs on the surface anymore, so they will die too.
