Hey all, my S.P. cuttings finally came today. about 26" total. What would be the best way to consume it fresh?
I urge you to consider cutting a few inches off of each one, say 3 or so. Let the ends form a cork like seal on the ends, maybe a week or two, then get yourself some cactus mix and put each down about two inches into the soil in a nice, flat ceramic pot. it is the perfect time of year for it. water this well drained soil about once every other week. You could also use your stash of rooting powder, or gel and coat the part of the plant that you intend to put into the soil. After a surprisingly short amount of time you will begin to see some new spines on that little plug. While your little plug is getting ready it will slowly begin to shrink between the ridges. Once you see those spines begin to grow, and the plug begin to swell a little you will know that you have gotten roots.
Once that happens, you can water more often, especially in the summer - I water mine once or twice a week in the summer, once a week in the spring and fall and once a month in the winter.
The point of all this is to perpetuate your strain. If you happen to find upon eating the rest that it is strong, you will have started a life time supply of a cactus that you will forever know has about the same amount of active ingredient. Now, for the most part you can estimate your dose without having to guess. OF course the potency will depend upon the time of year you harvest, the amount of water retained in the flesh and the fertility of the soil it is grown in.
But the main point is that you will get pups or sprites very quickly. After the sprites are several inches long (usually one season), you can cut them off and plant them. Each growing tip will yield about a foot a year. After you have done this for several seasons you will never be without it again. I currently have 28 independently growing tips and another 20 or so sprites that I will likely plant in a few weeks.
I am experimenting with laying the little plug on its side in the dirt, it seems to work pretty well and I get a few more sprites than I normaly get otherwise. When your original stock is rooted enough, it will put forth half a dozen or more sprites every year.
Be sure your soil drains well, very well, it should not retain water as the cactus is prone to rot. But don't think that your plants don't need nutrients. I ususally put osmocote on the soil every spring and again at the middle of summer. Full sunlight after they have been alimatized is the best. Also, I am finding that adding some calcium plant suplement is a good idea.
Of course, if you find that you don't think these cuttings give the best chemical yield, then consider it a dry run. Even if you don't harvest them right away, eventually you will have enough to do an extraction where it won't matter how strong they are.
