I've been very curious about doing bulb veggies in hydroton.... Well they come out looking like a golf ball or something?

Asperegus takes a long time to germ from seed and requires at least 2 year old roots to grow harvestable buds. Normally people buy the root stalk of male plants and let them grow for a season without harvesting.

Not a good plant for hydroponics FYI.

You also know that lettuce is a cold weather crop, whereas peppers are not, right?

Beans will need a trellis or some poles to climb up which will not be the same height as your other plants and require some fancy light solutions to accomodate all those plants in one place.

Just wondering what is all the hype about growing vegetables hydro or inside at all? Unless you are starting them to plant outside at a later date. I always plant a garden every year outside 60' long & 30' wide but may trim that by half this year because of last years weather. Starting inside to put outside is fine but growing them inside is to harvest is just silly to me. 1 green onion bulb = 1 green onion. They grow quick enough but why not plant outside unless u have no other alternative?

Grow pot inside as it is illegal but plant the veggies outside so you can enjoy them the way nature intended you to do.

I encourage everyone to grow veggies indoors. Not everyone has a yard that is condusive to growing food. Plus, whats better, a tomato that you grew in Feb, or something that was picked when it was hard and green from some industrial field in the southern hemisphere, grown in who knows what conditions, and treated with who knows what, that you buy in the store for way too much for so little nutritional value or flavor?

Short answer: the tomato you grew. You realize that the more of your own food you grow, the less your grocery bill will be, right? Right now i have white turkish radishes growing in my flowering area and in my germination/cloning chamber, i have 4 tomato plants, 4 wax pepper plants, and a bunch of basil that just germinated, as well as 6 clones.

The more you do for yourself, the less you have to deal with someone elses problems.

Im sorry if i busted anyones bubble, but i do a LOT of gardening and these are things you dont think about until it happens, then you have to scramble to come up with a way to get everything back in ballance.

Steamed asperagus wrapped in thin sliced proccutio and drizzeled with balsamic vinegar and topped with shaved parmesan cheese is the best!

No offense taken here.

My yard is in an ancient riverbed, mainly good sized (grapefruit to football) rock and sand front and back yards. 5 years ago I gave up on maintaining a grass yard. I started killing all the weeds and what little grass there was. Then I called the quarry and had them dump 12 truckloads of gravel. Got out my shovels, rakes and wheelbarrow and got to it.. Yard front and back plus the driveway.

When I grew outside I had to dig down 4 ft in 1/2 of my back yard and fill it with 8 truckloads of organic soil mix. Problem there was keeping it fed. Soil wears out. Then the fertilizers need to be added and it got to be too much. I rocked it over and gave up on the outside growing due to the elements. In the shed I don't worry about bugs, winds, nosy people or heavy aromas.

I know more about marijuana versus veggies. Those big friggin tubs were sitting around doing nothing after trying them indoors for the mj. I don't like to have my money sitting around doing nothing so I figured what the H?

Yeah they're outside in the back, I'm running TAP water in the tubs. No nutes yet.

Hell, I was raised in a family of hunters and fishermen on the male side and gardeners on the female side. The women folk in our clan had the green thumbs and did all the gardening, canning, and crop tending. C'mon, I was raised in the 50' & 60's, it was like that where I'm from.

Plus I'm done with my career and need to fill my spare time between hunting and fishing seasons.

I'm a good scrambler, kind of like a Red Green at BLL. I'll come up with the solutions to my dilemmas by observing and adjusting as I go, with a roll of aluminum tape nearby. Run into a problem I'll kick back and fire up a fattie for inspiration,,,,,,,,,:joint:

Shame about your yard. I have about an acre of land, but most of it is a pretty steep hill so my outdoor garden is limited to a 30'x18' plot and a few other smaller plots and containers.

Im not much of a hunter or fisherman (i dont like fish and wild game isnt really my thing either), but i garden as well as smoke, can, and pickle. My next endevor, once i get more land, will be raising livestock. Eventally i want to be off the grid except for cable and internet, i cant grow my own porn yet.

Actually doing the rock in the yard lowered our water bill by so much it's unreal.

My outdoor garden was 40 ft long by 20 feet wide. We grew some great mj and tomaters along with honey dew melons, cantaloupe, beans, lettuce, onions and rhubarb.

So no worries here on the hydro veggie deal. I'll keep notes on what does and doesn't work for me and just keep swimming along,,,,

Looks really nice Boomer. I my self have an indoor herb garden so that I can have fresh herbs year round.

Green you have a very good point. That is why I started to grow my own food. I chose indoors because where I live there isn't much of a yard but I could build a green house there but cost wise I can't afford to build it so I bought a AeroGarden. Yes it cost me $150 and I said I couldn't afford to build a green house out side but all the stuff that I would need would cost alot more and I needed some thing that is simple, clean looking and gives a room in the house a nice little touch of some thing special. Also I chose to grow indoors because I want year round herbs and such.

I started indoor gardening simply as a hobby and to learn about gardening and plants in general. I have no need to grow meds as I don't use it in any fashion. People that argue cost vs. yield are a little off balance IMO. My system added 40 dollars a month to the electric bill. If someone eats from the produce section of the local grocery (sans walmart) you will spend more than that a month. My current nutrients I can't see lasting me any less than 2-3 months and cost 30 dollars total.

Mind you I have overhead, sure, but we'll chalk that up to hobby expenses. I feel once I get dialed I can easily make my money back off of greens alone, let alone peppers and other small fruiting veggies such as micro tomatoes and such. If you use perlite/vermiculite combos you can grow your "bulb" veggies as well. Onions, carrots, potatoes...whatever you care to grow.

All that being said, i'd love a greenhouse.
