GPH for drippers?

I'm starting to plan an outdoor garden for next year and I'm looking forward to using 1/4" drip irrigation that is branched from a 1/2" main line that is hooked up to a water barrel for pressure. The clones will be grown directly in the ground and I'm unsure as to what GPH drippers to use? I'd rather not use timers and instead run consistently throughout each day and would like to keep the ground with sufficient moisture without over watering. I just stopped at the hardware store and the lowest GPH they had was 1/2 GPH which seems way too much for steady watering.

Do you put yours on a timer or are they run throughout the day?

My drip system hooks to the garden hose. I use the stove timer in the kitchen
