You can run your lights closer using a light rail. I would imagine 18" with a 1000W would do. You'd need 10' rails to cover 12' distance at least. As long as the ends but up closely and square two rails can be joined to make a longer one but I'm not sure what sizes they are sold in with longer ones.
Shop around for the drives as the prices vary a lot. I'm looking at my invoice for the one I bought and it's regular price was $408.55 but I got it for $249.37 on sale. The 6' rail itself was only $25. Made in Colorado so I'm counting on it being better than some knock-off made in China. Seems to work very well but as it's the first one I've ever had I can't really say if it's better than any other one.
The up-front cost is a lot for a hobby grower like myself but I expect to save down the line by only needing one light to do an 8x4 tent where a ballast, bulb and reflector would cost more than a light rail to cover that tent with 2 - 1000W lights and the savings in electricity alone is enough to justify the expense over just a couple of grows. Our power runs from $.18 - $.24/kwh and is my largest expense. 1kwh x 12hrs/day x 30 days/mth x $.20/kwh x 2mths/crop = $144/crop for power. So two crops will pay for the light mover then the rest is gravy.
It only uses 9W.
