Grow Tent in Closet in an Apartment Building

Hi everyone! It looks like my wife and I are going be moving from one apartment to another and need to change up my indoor grow setup. I will have my own room (as an office) in the apartment and am thinking of setting up a grow tent in the closet for a stealthier grow.

My closet grow set up will be:

  • grow tent (see below)
  • 400w MH/HPS
  • two 4" inline fans (one for hood, one for carbon filter exhaust)
  • passive intake
Secret Jardin makes the DR40 (1'3.75" x 1'3.75" x 3'11.25") and the DR60 (1'11.5" x 1'11.5" x 4'7"), maybe even a DR80 if the closet is large enough... which sound like perfect ten sizes to fit into the average closet. So a couple of questions for all of you indoor growers:

1.) will these tents be tall enough to grow super silver haze or kush strains?
2.) how many plants can be grown in a DR40 or DR60? (i was hoping 2 or 3?)
3.) when flowering, will there be a major ganja stink even if i am drying/curing in the tent with the carbon filter exhaust? (am concerned the stink will permeate through the floors or ceilings.. is this even a reasonable concern?)

Of course, I will be installing a lock onto the closet door and to the door of my office.

Thanks guys.

i have a dr40 and the only reason i have tht is because i dont have a wardrobe big enough to fit a dr60 or larger.
also it seems quite tall but once you fit lights and pots inside there is limited space, another issue you will have with that is most reflectors are longer than 40cm so will not fit.
personally if you have the space id go with the dr80 every time however the 60 should also do nicely kush isnt very tall normally and is a gd smoke tho i do prefer hazes.
as long as you have a carbonfilter and proper extraction fans smell should be very minimal hardly noticeable even.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that the DR40 might be a tad on the short side, especially once you set up the hood and lights... Just want to make doubly sure that smell and noise (ballast, two 4 in inline fans) won't be an issue. Speaking of noise..

Do you guys think the two 4" inlines and a ballast are going to be particularly noisy? Do you think you will hear the hum of the fans/ballast when outside of the room, either in the apartment or in an apartment above or below me?

I'm not concerned about hearing a gentle hum when I am in the room, just don't want to whole apartment to be vibrating.

ah noise yea thats bin an issue for me recently iv ended up taking the hit and got som acoustic ducting which got rid of the whoosh noise frm the filter area and just set the fan also 4inch to low speed and wrapd it inside a sleeping bag and now even standing outside the drobe with no other noise it is very hard to hear even having the window open is enough background noise to cover it unless u put ur ear to the door

I am running a 4" inline fan (in a Growlab 60) and a 6" inline fan (in a DR120W) in my apartments master bedroom and the noise isn't bad enough to go through any neighbors walls, you can't even hear them in the next room

i had a tent in my 1 bedroom apt (not sure what kkind but 6.5 feet tall) a 400 watt ballast and a 4 inch inline fan going. you couldnt hear it outside the room, i actually slept comfortably right next to it. no noise no smell (carbon filter of course)

hmm prehaps i should clarify the noise was not bad however it was slightly noticeable inside the room and people may wander in from time to time and i just wanted to be 100% safe.

Thanks guys, this is great information. I didn't want to buy and set everything and turn everything on only to have my wife become concerned with all of the noise from the fans and ballast and the smell of ganja all over the apartment. If need be I'll use some sound insulation to minimize the noise of the fans and ballast.

Is it safe to use acoustic ducting? I thought that I read somewhere it can pose something of a fire hazard? Is there that much a difference in noise when using acoustical ducting vs normal ducting? The only thing in my tent would be the hood and lights (+ ducting). The inline fans and carbon filter will be on the outside of the tent (to maximize the real estate within the tent)

Will drying and curing in a tent with a carbon filter exhaust neutralize the smell of the ganja? I don't want that stuff to even smell in the room the closet's in.

Personally I would dump using 2 4" inline fans for a 400w set up, I have a 600w setup and I use a single 6" inline fan rated at 435cfm and it works just fine. Double the fans, double the noise, IMO

Don't use HydroFarm ducting, at least not their low end (not sure if they have different models) because they tore apart after about a month. They do the job but when I get some extra money, I'm going to invest into better ducting, not sure which one though

@bajafox

what does your single inline fan setup look like? i was planning on using one inline for the hood (pulling are in, over bulb, and out the other side), and at the bottom of the tent would be another inline sucking air out of the tent, to a carbon filter, and out....

My set up is inside a Secret Jardin DR120W and it goes:

Phresh Filter > Cool Tube > 6" 435cfm fan > Exhaust

There is a link in my sig to my entire setup if you're interested. The temperatures in my apartment today is 75 and my flower tent is at 86 with 600w SL

it did eliminate the woosh from the carbom filter however the main noise i find comes from the inline fan and that is considerably louder than either the air been suckd into the filter or the ballast in it all depnds on how silent you really need it fans the loudest then ducting and filter and ballest least noise.
to control the fan noise you can either just cover it in more and more layers or diy a lil wooden box lined with padding or such it all depends how much you got to spend and how much of an issue noise is. as you said its going to be in a locked room you can probably do with bare min amount of sound control as noise frm a loud pc should mostly mask it anyway

If you dont mind I'll just go ahead and post some vids of both my tents:

My veg room is a GrowLab 60 with 4" inline fan, 239w cfl (actual) and no filter:

Just add a carbon filter at the loose end inside the tent, it will also greatly reduce the noise because it acts like a silencer

Thanks. The thinking behind using two 4 inch inline fans was that the air cooled hood would have a fan dedicated simply to cooling the hood. This inline fan would only be on when the light is on. The second inline fan carbon filter exhaust set up would be on a timer to turn on two or three times per hour for 10 or 15 min to expel the air in the tent and pull in new air passively. Both fans wouldn't be running all of the time...

Weird, I just noticed on the greners.com website that they recommend a 250w HPS/MH in a Secret Jardin DR60 and DR80.... I was planning on a 400w set up...

will using only 250w HPS/MH majorly (negatively) affect growing in the tent?

It really depends on how much money you have and how much you want to grow. Greners description for a DR120W recommends dual 150w HPS or MH lights but I'm running a single 600w HPS.

If you can run 400w and manage the temps I would go with 400w

the more light the better as long as you can maintain a consistent temperature in the tent. Should not be difficult with a decent inline fan and a air cooled hood.

Thanks guys.

Just to set my wife's mind at ease, exactly how effective will the carbon filter be, especially during the very smelly stages of the grow (flowering...drying...curing...)? I'm definitely going to dry/cure in the tent with the carbon filter but just want to make certain that no one smells the setup... Is it possible that 2 or 3 plants, in the tent, in the closet, properly carbon filtered, will keep the smell down to basically zero through all stages of the grow?

I'd like to not even smell anything in the room that the closet is in.

well u can dry in the tent but u have to cure in an airtight unless u wna fuck about with water curing ect... not worth the effort imo
carbon filter should be very effective and u shouldnt smell anything outside the tent and if u did it would be a very small smell cured by placing a block of ona or similar inside ur drobe
