I would recommend using a CFL (compact fluorescent light),
There are two types of spectrum available to buy,

Blue spectrum is for vegging Phase
Red spectrum for flowering Phase

They are alot cheaper to buy than a HPS or MH bulbs, you don't need a ballast to run them either,

Hope this helps

Go out an buy the longest vanity you can(bathroom mirror light holder) fit in your space and add a ton of y-splitters so that you can put in a ton of CFL's. You can keep CFLs very close to your plants and your going to have to. Go check out the CFL forum here and just read for about a day. You will figure it out. GL with your grow.

Hi
I have a very similar setup to yours with the exception that I have extremely cool air moving through the intake [from the chimney]. 1m long x 1m high x 50cm deep

going to put a 250w mh in there for veg then hps for bloom, will be fine.

large cfls are definitely NOT cheaper than HPS for the same amount of wattage,
in my area, where one 250w red and one 250w blue will cost £80, and the same again when you need to replace.

HPS w/ ballast on the other hand will be £70 initially, and less than £20 when you need to replace.

It depends how much heat you can handle...with that kind of extraction I reckon you'd be safe with an HPS, definitely with envirolite [large cfl], MH maybe pushing it a bit. Small cfls can work, but will be more awkward to configure, move around etc.
HPS is worth the investment. You have plenty of space.

There are dual spectrum CFL's (blue + red),

I have had just 1 of these for over a year and i have had no problems with it,
They ARE really cheap to run,
I have 150w dual spectrum CFL,
Was £20 with the lead and all,
Saving you £60 if you dont buy a hps or mh,
