When is the best time to clip the plant so it doesn't end up like a bean stalk?
I think it is more the angle of the light. Using 3 HPS 400 watt bulbs. Any closer and we fry the girls. Hopefully by increasing the reflective material on the sides I will get bushier plants. It does seem like I read something in the forum about topping them to make the plants more bushy.the only way your plant will get tall and skinny is if your plants arent getting enough light. if you had scrawny plants in the past, get a better light or move your current light closer to the tops of your plants
We are all dumber for having read that response.crack works
Perfect. That's what I needed to know. Thank you for the help with the nomenclature as well!Topping works, to stop the plants stretching too much, and encourages lateral growth (branching). It is stressful to the plant though, so I would only advise it during vegging. You could also FIM (similar to topping, more fiddly, but can lead to more than 2 tops), or supercrop.
I usually supercrop when I want to encourage branching, since I don't like chopping bits off my plants if I can help it, and it is less stressful than fimming/topping.
You could also consider LST if you want low profile, "bushy" plants, or even ScroG, if you can be bothered installing a screen.
