I had something similar happen. The meter on the house quit working and by bill dropped to almost nothing. They sent a guy out to see why. As stated before they most likely would do the same if there was a rise in usage. They would check just to avoid an angry customer. Keep your eyes open, but I dont think you have too much to worry about.

I think you're alright, just keep an eye on the situation.

I think that you should trust your intuition. That is what it is for! Abort this project and wait until your are comfortable again. Otherwise your paranoia may get the better of you!

Our power bill jumped from $200 to $1000 last year for no reason. We had no garden back then either. We are still fighting with our power company. However it may be reassuring to know that even with that sort of spike, no one made any enquiries.
