Gypsum - stop putting chemicals in your soil!!

Didn't say I had a sulfur deficiency. I said when the soil mix started to wane I added a little. Along with coffee ground compost, chicken manure compost, HollyTone 3-4-3, and assorted other things according to what I have at the time. Don't want to fight about it. Someone was asking about it and I told how I used it. Not saying it is right, just what I do.
Not trying to fight excuse me, I can be forceful with information.

Did you know chicken manure has the highest content of sulfur of the manures? .5%
Some good calcium too

You use hollytone that has so much sulfur it will lower your pH. It's at 5%
Some good calcium too.

What I been trying to say is A. You will lock your plants up with the calcium in gypsum, B. It doesn't help your pH.
And you already have more Sulphur than blueberry Gardner's lol

But if you have to load up on my Cal and Sulphur because you seem to have your mind made do a journal for us.

I'm here to talk about walking. I'll try harder to stay off the grow threads in the future.

But if you really think 10 cups of Gypsum is too much for a 40-45 gallon soil mix, I will give cutting back some serious thought. Right now I do have a good supply of chicken shit compost, so my mixes are pretty heavy with it.

It's twice as much as coots mix. Do it if you want. But do it on what you can afford to screw up. Don't do all your plants this way.

Are you going to use lime to help balance the pH from hollytone?

The Gypsum is pretty new to my mix, so I haven't really worked out how much works best. I just made a mix this week. I have dropped off a few buckets here and there for my fall/winter grow, but I could make a new mix and divide what is still around.

I do use lime. I use about 20-24 cups of coffee ground compost per mix, and I read you need to offset that with lime. Also use mushroom compost, which needs lime as well. I only put 2-3 cups of the Holly Tone, and 1-2 cups of 5-5-5 Organic ferts per mix. Experience has taught me to go easy on the smelly stuff.

I am seeing the classical mistake of someone wanting instant good soil....
There are no real shortcuts.... unless you want to make soil you can use once or twice before throwing it away, destroyed.
Minimum period to make good soil outdoors is about 300 days.

The water source for one of my patches is sulfur water. That patch seemed to have fatter, tastier buds. But it could have been the fact it was closer to the water source, so it just had more water than the other patches.

BTW, I don't buy worm casting or bag compost. Or most other high dollar weed stuff. It was the fact that I live in a peanut producing area that I knew about Gypsum. If I lived out in the midwest where it was corn from here to there, the odds are I would have never heard of it.
He's right. I've lived in Iowa Illinois and Missouri my whole life. As far as I knew gypsum was drywall. There used to be an urban legend about some kids around here that ate some gypsum seeds and they got all high and did some epic crazy shit but then they went braindead or died or something . Idk just some b/s i heard from a guy while smoking under a bridge across the Mississippi years ago....

That would be Jimson Weed not Gypsum seeds and that stuff will mess you up.

"The dangers of jimson weed and its abuse by teenagers in the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia.

Side effects from ingesting jimson weed include tachycardia, dry mouth, dilated pupils, blurred vision, hallucinations, confusion, combative behavior, and difficulty urinating. Severe toxicity has been associated with coma and seizures, although death is rare."

Years ago I was in Muscatine Iowa and drove across the bridge into Illinois just to say I drove across the Mississippi river. I thought I smelled weed.

Love gettin called into a thread, means folks are payin attention :)

That said I'm not on here as much as I used to be since I've retired to da farm

Tis true that a sulfur rich medium is good for our plants but elemental sulfur is not the way to go as it is not readily available to the plant and sulfates are !!!

gypsum is not the best option in most cases as it is Calcium Sulfate and too much Cal can cause nute burns and lockouts. Plus let's not forget there is a necessary ratio between Cal & Mag and in most cases there is enough Cal in the water for the plants needs. That is unless you are usin RO or distilled water, then ya need to add it

Most all trace elements are available as sulfates, I use

Magnesium Sulfate
Potassium Sulfate
Copper Sulfate
Zinc Sulfate
Iron Sulfate
Manganese Sulfate
as well as a few others

The important thing to remember is that the ratio's of the elements with respect to N is very critical !!!

Folks need to know how these elements affect things as well. While N is a must for plants it also inhibits THC production while Manganese feeds THC production and iron feeds CBD production

These things are also affected by the spectrum of light, if growing outdoors, no problem as the sun is full spectrum. But if your under HPS lights you will not see much difference as HPS has very little blue and the blue spectrum enhances what sulfates offer the plant

I explain this in great detail in my books :)
I looked into manganese but with the plants needing such a minute amount of it and a dominant ewc medium I just left things alone. With most solutions only carrying .05% and if you use ewc how much are you adding?

I grow in peat and dirt but that doesn't matter, what matters is ratio's just like the ratio of Cal to Mag the ratio of Manganese to Iron is equally important as well as above all the ratio's of all elements with regard to Nitrogen

After seeing the studies indicating the effects of Manganese and Iron, I took Mel frank's recipe for potency from one of his books and experimented with and came up with my own, this took awhile and is part of my book so I won't share it here but I will share Mel's recipe and the proper ratio info for folks that wanna play with it

Here is Mel Franks recipe for potency,,,,,,,,

"Mel Frank offers this micronutrient formula for high cannabinoid production: Fe-sulfate (5 mg/gal), Cu-sulfate (0.2 mg/gal), Mn-sulfate (2 mg/gal), Zn-sulfate (0.2 mg/gal), Boric acid (2 mg/gal), Molybdenic acid (0.1 mg/gal). Use 1 tspn/gal of nutrient solution, once monthly."

the percentages/ratio's to prevent lockouts. These numbers assume that Nitrogen (N) is 100%

Iron (Fe) = 0.25

Manganese (Mn) = 0.13

Zinc (Zn) = 0.012

Copper (Cu) = 0.019

Boron (B) = 0.04

Molybdenum (Mo) = 0.004

Ahh good ol datura, it grows wild all over the place here. Makes you trip without thinking your tripping. A buddy of mine had to go to the hospital because he couldn't piss when he was on that stuff, had to get a catheter lol definitely not something you would take recreationaly.

Wow.
My soil has 103ppm iron and 12 ppm manganese.
