Harvest is close, watching trichromes, advice

Im growing 4 autos, One of which is a Fastbuds Wedding Cheesecake. Billed as seed to harvest in 63 days. IMO a bit ambitious, but that's marketing.

Ok, I'm in day 77. Beautiful frosty plant, but the only place I see amber trichomes is on the sugar leaves, and very little on the buds.

I've attached two photos, the first is a bud, second a sugar leaf. As you can see, the sugar has amber, bud has almost none. Should I wait, or is it harvest time.

Looks like plenty of clear trichs there also though hard to tell. Can you post pics of the whole plant and a few closer shots of buds?

Looks really nice. Some time to go. I wouldn’t worry about looking at trichomes until pistils are close to 100% brown. I’d say a few weeks probably. Totally normal. I harvested my last 70 day plants at day 93 or something like that. Let her finish up properly. Nice work so far.

Plant's looking good! Like what @DeadHeadX mentioned, I also wait for the pistils to turn brown and recede into the calyx before chop. Just enjoy watching her develop for another couple of weeks and you'll see the results. Those buds will get nice and plump. Took me a number of grows before I got the hang of it, but now I don't really check the trichomes much at all.

You see the reason I'm so concerned is 420 Fastbuds goes out of their way to promote Wedding Cheesecake is seed to harvest in 63 days. They say it over and over in all their videos. I don't want this plant to over ripen and the potency degrade.

The timing from vendors, and not just cannabis but also tomatoes, peppers, etc, is rarely right. I think they're assuming perfect growing conditions with the estimates. Just trust yourself and the multiple Auto growers here who have experience. Almost every auto I've grown has neared 90+ days and many have gone for 110-120 days. Usuaally Sativa dominants in the latter case.

One essential thing to understand as a new grower is that it’s really easy to harvest early, and there is a pretty wide window in which you can get a good harvest. It’s much harder to harvest too late. Yours is not in the harvest window yet from what I can see. The plant does not follow any rules but its own once it’s growing, and autos especially will do their own thing. Plants from the same seed pack can be wildly different (auto genetics are unpredictable). Honestly, 63 days is a crazy claim. Many of the breeders make these claims, but once the seed is in the ground, all you can do is follow what the plant is telling you. Please trust this. You will be much happier with what happens to that plant in 2-3 weeks. She will swell and get really stinky.

I hope others weigh in. I’ve read lots of articles, threads and grow journals on the topic, and I’ve grown a couple dozen autos at this point. 90+ days is totally normal. No auto breeders advertise those time frames. Sometimes they’re ready sooner, but yours need more time to reach their potential. Post a few more pics also.

Thank you.

I've been growing photos for years, inside and out. However I prefer inside because of the short growing season here in the NE.

I'm experimenting with a new HID lighting arrangement, and it seems to be doing well. I just don't want to lose the race in the home stretch lol

I’d have to concur with @DeadHeadX that the plant is the one who will decide when it’s time ;)
I have the same handheld microscopes, loupes etc. and they are all helpful aids in a holistic tool belt approach, but she’s the boss. After a while, look, touch and good ‘ol olfactory will let you know :)

Gotcha. Sorry for the confusion on that one. I’m in the northeast also and find the same. I’ve successfully grown autos outside here, but the final product was not close to what a good indoor grow can produce. Tough outdoor season last year. My photos also had issues due to all the humidity.

Good luck with a strong finish to the current grow!

Last summer we had a tough season for outdoor gardening. I grow a lot of heirloom tomatoes and we had some horrible periods of soaking rain.

Anyway, my new next door neighbor grew three cannabis plants that were each 7' tall! He claims he never grew before. I'll bet he got 2lbs of bud. Funny part is, I never saw him go near those plants all summer.

Think the whole NE had a weird outdoor grow. I know I did here in Toronto. Smog/haze from Quebec & Alberta forest fires and what I’d call a generally hazy overcast summer made it a challenge. Here’s to a better ‘24! 8-)
