Dimming the lights down from 12 to 0 to speed up the process. For instance if there's 30 days of flowering left and I switch from 12 to 10 hours for a few days them10 to 8 and so fourth would it speed up trich production? I'm currently double majoring in horticulture and soil science and I understand photosynthesis and light for growth and yadeeee yadddah but if a dark period is to enhance trich production wouldn't this be a more realistic end of a plants life?!?!

Just gettin high and having thoughts y'all. I love to experiment if nobody knows and this has been asked already sorry for asking again but it was hard to think what to google or type into the search barto describe my question without it being like a paragraph

This plant was originally designed to grow outside like all other plants. The only way we can grow it to its full potential inside, is to mimic the ou tside enviroment. Your idea will not make your plants produce more resin. Providing perfect conditions in your garden will increase not only resin production, but overall yield as well.

"Dark periods" do not "enhance" trich production....
The real answer is a long and technical......But trust me, Dark periods do not enhance, increase or improve trich "production".

S and Mg will....in workable amounts.

Decreasing lights on times in Bloom ,,,, I still do that for "some" long running sativa's.

Not often and not many....mostly after 10 - 12 weeks has passed..

Interesting. I shave an hour off my 12/12 timers as it gets closer to the end. My hope is that the reduction in daylight makes the plant think "My season is ending,, time to pack it in".

I have had nothing but good experiences with a planned reduction in light hours throughout the grow. Light hours below 9 per day hasn't been of any real benefit.

Yes that is a thought process similar too mine.
How many hours are you down to when you chop?
Do you just shave the one hour the whole time or hour every few days?

Lol love how you phrased this because this thought entered my brain as thinking of a way to make up for poor conditions these past few weeks.

Had temps up to 90 and ph problems and yikes I learned that's a bad combo!

And after re reading if the best way is to mimic the conditions outside then shorting day periods would be a good thing?? Because nature has time periods that's differ year round

I only shave 1 hour no more than twice and when I go from 11 to 10 they're essentially done anyway or very close to it. Often at 10 hours plants are leaving one by one for the chop as they become ready.
I have to say I don't know if it has any effect at all, but its usually around the same time I'm adding lights to my veg tent getting ready for the next run so I'm saving 2 hours of light a day in the flowering room and using more in the veg tent.
I have to be mindful of the electricity I use. I use lots of it ( by my standards anyway )

A 14 week sativa is down to 10 hrs.
A 16 week sativa is down to 10 hrs strain dependent....(Landrace plants to 10-11 only - no lower.....Some equatorial landrace strains don't get reduction at all. Thai and Vietnamese black have problems with light reduction. So does Lambs breath).

Reductions are done weekly - start slowly in 1/2hr increments. Less for landrace, more like 15min a week, starting at week 12
Only Sativa's get the reduction and then only 90% plus cross's or landrace get it....I begin at week 10.

Indica's start at 11/13 and stay there. Period.

Reducing lights on times do make the plant speed up the finish some....Like I've had a few Sativa's simply not want to finish....drop them to 10hrs and they pick up and finish......The amount of time cut from bloom = not as much as you'll think.
In trials/testing done at times down to 6 hrs you only cut about 7-9 days off the bloom......At 6 hr bloom times. Expect about 75 to 78% of your normal yield.....You can make that better by adding to the lighting intensity and gassing.....I have been able to increase that yield to about 90% at 7-8hrs by increasing lighting intensity by about 30%......New, higher output bulbs and 20% higher reflective hoods....(good luck finding Jupiter 6 &8 hoods - The company folded and he is selling off the stock...I had to practically fight for the 10 hoods I got). I find that 10 hrs seems to be the tipping point for loss of yield.....It starts out low or very little, almost you can't tell unless you weigh everything carefully.......Once you hit 8 hrs your loosing!

It should be noted that this loss in yield was done in straight 6-7-8 hr lights on times - no slow reduction of on times.....I have not gone below 9 hrs in reducing time.....

9 hours is for the last 1-2 weeks when the bulk of the plant has finished. I start at 12/12 and drop it by 1/2 hr every 2 weeks or so. The strain's characteristics will inform you as to the exact schedule you'll need.

I've done this and I've not done it. The plants do seem to get the hint with a slightly shorter day length. I have never noticed a lack of yield, but I've generally done half hour increments thru the last half of bloom, ending at ten hours. It does indeed shave a few bucks off the power bill.

If you're running a flip schedule, an extra hour or two of darkness can help your cooling system catch up, especially in summer.
