Hash Making Adventure

Well guys I've gone and bought a freeze dryer.
I have a few pounds of fresh frozen trim/lowers that I have been hording for the last few runs of my setup.
I ran some plants through last winter without the fancy equipment and had some solid results even just with an air dry and micro plane.

I plan to run all of what I have though a 32-gallon 4 bag set from Rosin Evolution.
Scoop that right from the bags to individual trays of freeze dryer. Run the cycle.

From there I was wondering if anyone has experience with storing the hash to preserve the color/terps.
My plan now I guess would be a few Mason Jars lined with parchment paper sealed and put it the fridge/freezer?

Any insight on this would be great. Feel free to post your methods.

Should be getting things rolling here in the next few days. Ill update this post with how things go.

I wanted to get a Harvest Right also but the wife objected due to the cost. I haven't heard about the results from them but it seems like a solid idea.

I've still got some trim from my summer outdoor grow too. Due to coming down with pneumonia I have not been physically able to make hash yet. I harvested in early October; any idea if it's still good?

Sorry to here about you being off your feet.

I freeze everything right after trimming and store there until I am ready to run it. I’m pretty sure the lifespan in the freezer is pretty solid. I’d say you be fine as long as it has been stored properly.

Hit a bit of a snag with the shipping of the freeze dryer guys.

I Have the problem ironed out and we should be back in action in the next few days.

In the mean time here are some pictures of what I have going in my garden now to give you an idea of what I will be washing.

First 3 are Blackberry Tart (Tony Greenhand)
Last 3 are Gas Powered Sherb x Blueberry (Okie&Bean)

Okay everyone, freeze dryer has landed.

I’ve gotten her set up and ran through the first Test run of the unit running some plain bread through the machine as per the instructions.

The temperature is set to drop over the weekend where I am located and I plan to wait for that to begin the hash making process.

That being said I suppose you can expect the results sometime at the beginning of next week.

One of those dryers that can make astronaut ice cream sandwiches? Those things are crazy expensive from what I've seen. I looked at them a few years ago for backpacking food purposes.

I've only just ventured into hash making other than dry sift.

I put ice, water and bud/trim into a bucket then put the lid on to shake it before filtering, you can get a good sloshing rhythm going with a bucket.
Looks solid brother. In the past I have used 5-gallon buckets and a kid's beach shovel and gotten decent results. I am hoping to reduce the amount of runs I have to do by upgrading to the 32-gallon sized bags and trashcans.

Without the freeze dryer I Would probably freeze the hash right out of the water over night then micro-plane and let dry for a week or two.
After that I like to press it between parchment paper with a wine bottle full of hot water and roll it into temple balls. (Frenchy Tech)

Yeah man the price tag is hefty. But I think that if used properly it can pay for itself in a short amount of time.

I keep reading about freezing it, is that an essential step?

I dried mine at room temperature + dehumidifier and broke it down/raked into a fine crumble then broke up the lumps inside a oven bag leaving a fine powder, I wouldn't want to ruin it? _20211211_213502.JPG
After getting it to a powder I gave it another couple of days drying before pressing?

The idea behind freezing it is to make it one solid piece and cold to help with the micro-plane (small cheese grater) process.

Wet plant matter is the perfect breeding ground for mold.
You want your hash to be fully dry. Gotta be careful with big chunks of hash being wet for too long.
The Freezing and micro-plane process gets the hash into a fine sand for a more uniform dry.
That being said there are many ways to dry. The fancy stuff is just about reducing the risk of contamination.

What you did looks fine i'd throw some in a bowl and if she smokes like she's dry give her the press.

Very interested in how this unit performs for ya. I'll be tagging along too

I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a freeze dryer for a while now.
Lately I've been squishing dry which is good but the fresh frozen has a far better taste.

I’ve never messed around too much with dry sift but the idea of not wetting the hash to begin with is interesting.

Fresh Frozen has treated me well but after the oxygen gets to it and it turns dark during the dry it’s hard to convince ppl it’s top tier.

The Freeze Dryer should help me keep that nice Gold color that I have coming out of the ice water.

Okay people I ran the first batch of bubble last night it is in the freeze dryer as I write this.

It was 26 degrees here last night so the conditions were right and I managed to get some nice pulls.

I must admit I was by myself so being lazy I did not weigh the amount of trim I used.

That being said it was the biggest amount I’ve ever done in a single batch filling an ~20 gallon trash can.

All one Strain for now BlackBerry Tart (Tony Greenhand).

I Will probably mix what trim I have for the next runs because there is a solid amount of variation and I don’t wanna do this 10 times haha.

I preformed the process for 5 cycles until I thought the returns were diminished.

The first pull I separated the microns but after that I just went with full spectrum and mixed it all on one tray. Will see if there is a big difference in quality between the two.

Hash comes out of the dryer later tonight I’ll update with what we have

62 grams of nice blond hash.

Thats 7% if about 2 pounds was used, which sounds about right. Right in the range for fresh frozen trim so I’m happy.

It seems running full spectrum 45u-159u worked fine and I plan on pressing into rosin down the road anyways so not to concerned with keeping them separate.

Still have about half of what trim we started with so there is more to come in the coming days.

Ran the other half of the material last night guys.

This was a mix of a few different strains including.
Purple Crash (Greenpoint)
Larry Og (Oni I think)
Lemon Citron (HSO)
Gas Powered Sherb (Okie and Bean)

It was a bit less material than the first run and some of it was definitely the oldest of the bunch spending 6 months or so in the freezer but it ran well.

She yielded another 42 grams. That’s 62+42=104

Just short of a Qp sadly but I’m not sad!
This will cover the full msrp of the dryer and give me some nice xmas smoke.

Cheers.
Merry Christmas.

I ran some of the second batch of hash (The Mix) into rosin about a month back now.

Started with about 48 grams of hash and wound up with ~25 grams of Rosin.

So somewhere a bit over 50% Return.

The kicker is I did it with a Hair Straightener.
So I am sure that there is plenty of room for improvement when I get around to getting a press.

Freezer is getting Full again should get another hash run in before winter ends stay tuned.
