dont get me wrong what he was mad fuked up but it was not pointless. with his "research" if you can call it that has helped us understand more about stem cells and nerves. and yeah the ape couldnt move his body but thats not the point the point is that the head was removed and reattached and still responded. i mean you can go as far as to what the nazi and german doctors did and look how much we learned from that. it seems like that the more fuked up things are the more we learn.

but they weren't trying to find out anything about stem cells or nerves. He knew from the beginning that one monkey would die, and one monkey would live the rest of his short life without the ability to control anything but his face. It's impossible to repair your central nervous system.
but yeah, it does, war and shit like that always advances our technology and abilities.
but those monkeys were victims of a mad scientist. we need a superhero or something.

Its absolute rubbish mate.
If you cant even repair the nerves and fibers correctly that connect a plant to its root system whats the point of chopping of an animals head in such a cruel and unusual manner?
Any fool can see that all you would end up with is a paralyzed head that could be kept alive until it died of sheer shock anyway.

Its just one more example of an impatient human acting in a cruel manner for profit.
Start at the bottom and work your way up.

it's not that it would replace it, stem cells are cells with the very basics of our dna. they say they can basically be put around any trauma area and these cells replicate and repair the damaged area.
stem cells are an example of good science. In my opinion. but a lot of people have a lot of problems with it because the good stem cells come from human embryos.

well you see its a step in the right direction to be able to repair the nerves system. do you really think that they would let you try this on a human? no thats why they try stuff out on animals first. if they didnt try this when they did think of how much longer inthe future it would take them to learn the mistakes that this dr made or the advancements he discovered. dont think of it as he was just doing this for fun and he made mad money off it b/c he didnt. his funding got cut. so in fact he lost money on it. i mean think about it. people prob said the same thing when the USA sent monkeys in to space and back to see if was alright for man.

Okay, I've got to give my .02 on this one.

First of all, there isn't anyone posting on this forum that hasn't benefitted from the scientific use of animals, period. Maybe they can test stuff on plants but would you use it knowing that? I doubt it. until they grow plants with hearts, eyes, brains, etc I think it riduculous to test on plant life rather than animals. Further more, what about the poor poor plants? Do you not care about their lives? Are they worth less than animal lives? Easy to get caught up in the catch 22 on this one.

Nat, you are a cool ass cat but anyone who values anything, including animal life, more than human life, has a poor set of priorities, PETA, IMHO. In the right set of circumstances I believe you would change your tune with a quickness. For example.

How many people are walking this earth with pacemakers and heart transplants and liver transplants and well you get the point. Do you think these procedures were perfected on humans? Do you think the first heart transplant was human? Hell no it was a pig. Was that guy a 'Mad Scientist' at the time? Maybe. But I doubt the people who are benefitting from his RESEARCH would say so.

Can you honestly tell me you'd rather die than take advatage of these advances in science that came at the expense of the poor poor animals? I seriously doubt it and it's easy to say now, but being in that position, you will do anything to survive.

Strange, this post has the appearance of a stated opinion. Yet it is damning in its description of anyone disagreeing with the writer.

Do you think this doctor preformed this surgery 'just to see if it were possible'? Does it not stand to reason that man, more then 96% similar to apes, will benefit from the resulting knowledge?

If human life can be saved by the trading of one head from a damaged body onto the body of a damaged head, I daresay you would do it, if the head was someone important to you. But how can a human expect to survive a surgery of which there has been no practice by the surgeon?

Life IS about making tough, controversial decisions, responsibly.

I have another one for you...someone has this absolutely blasphemous idea that they can remove a diseased organ from one human body and replace it with a healthy organ from another human or monkey or pig!

Gentleman, I do not defend this scientist in particular. I defend the pioneers of all advances who's work may very well appear as a sacrilege to those who lives are still embroidered by 'the hand of god'.

And so, there are really two debates here:

1. if you believe GOD made us this way, you must be prepared to explain why he gave us a diseased, faulty body with a need of constant maintenance, including surgery. and thus, why he gave us a mind great enough to invent these surgery necessary to maintain life, if it be a crime to perform them.

2. if you do not believe in god, you must simply explain why it is necessary to kill two monkeys for an experiment.

no. 1 is a can of worms which most great scientists will never have to answer...because they do not have a deacon or priest of a personal god to answer to. they can skip directly to no. 2. And the answer is: it will save human lives.

please note: there is no suffering in the animal. it is not crying out in pain. it is responding to stimulus. therefore: you cannot call this torture.

secondly: (this has been addressed) stem cells stand a very good chance of being able to repair and/or rebuild the severed nerves of the spinal cord. one day, a head transplant with injection of stem cells for a full recovery may be possible. and the man who pioneered that triumph of modern medicine, will be remembered for his genius. and the skills will be utilized in other related surgical feats, as well.

dude, it's impossible to reconnect the central nervous system of any animal. it's just too complex a network of nerves.
I'm not saying people who have paved the way for modern medicine are, or ever were mad scientists. This was just a bit off.

and im sure people said that heard or lung transplants were to complex at times too it just goes to show what learning and sometimes sick practice can do.
