Here in Colorado r the power company does not say a word. I have had some major power bills at residential locations and never a word was said.

my buddy works for Xcell as a service guy, he said in all the years he has been there, they only called the cops one time and that guy had blown his tree and blown out power for his group of houses on that tree. Tree being the post in your backyard or your neighbors.

I just had the cable company jump my shit and they didn’t give a shit either.

Yeah my POCO told me, "Hey you use a lot of power, we would like to upgrade you to a 400/320 AMP main."

What a first post, “outdoor crops grown close together emit an electronic signature that is like a beacon to the fly boys”. This has to be the dumbest shit I’ve ever read on here, and I’ve read some dumb ass shit over the years. Welcome to the forum btw, congrats on the dumbest post ever award. Isn’t this forum 18+?

dude, you are so fucking out of date...that's all old news, and mostly inaccurate.
the cameras in most helicopters are old as fuck and require expensive cooling methods to work, so 90% of the time, they're not using them, they're just trying to freak people out...looks like they succeeded with you...
and some electric companies will cooperate with law enforcement if asked, some will require a warrant. but none of them volunteer information to the cops, the cops have to come to them and ask....
don't do stupid shit, and the cops won't fuck with you...not hard to figure out
this is the answer everyone wants to hear (including me) but is there any evidence or fact to base this on? Maybe you have personal experience or you know a guy? Just asking because I’m curious myself.

I’ve personally spoken with two power techs about the power situation. They told me power company has a 0.00001% chance of reporting you BUT the city and police have access to utility usage records. These guys had nothing to gain by lying to me. They seemed honest. I still honestly have no clue though.

Conditions of Disclosure to Third Parties

A. The "No Disclosure Without Consent" Rule

“No agency shall disclose any record which is contained in a system of records by any means of communication to any person, or to another agency, except pursuant to a written request by, or with the prior written consent of, the individual to whom the record pertains [subject to 12 exceptions].” 5 U.S.C. § 552a(b).

they can get your records, with a court order, but if the electric company is volunteering anything without that court order, they're leaving themselves open to being sued, at the very least. it is NOT their place to report anything to anyone. if they do, they've broken a law, and should be taken to task for it.

Are you sure your posts info. pertains to a power company rather than a government agency ?

Hi there, just a heads up re power consumption.
The Power companies pass on information to police on a regular basis when power consumption increases at a property.
The police also use keys and private information that the power companies hold..
Also
FYI the new Air Force Choppers that fly around on training maneuvers have cameras that can see easily heat signatures and any outdoor crops grown close together emit an electronic signature that is like a beacon to the fly boys..
LMAO, LED Lights all but do away with heat..paying bills on time keeps power companies paid and happy, electronic signature? stop smoking crack.... Oh and its legal in my state now lmao

The US Court of Appeals, 7th District, in "Naperville Smart Meter Association v. Naperville" the "Court rules warrants are needed for cops to access smart electrical meter data. Correct me if I am wrong, unless this is overturned by the Supreme Court, it sets precedent in all 50 states.

https://www.eff.org/document/naperville-smart-meter-association-v-naperville-seventh-circuit-decision
https://www.in.gov/judiciary/2675.htm
it's kind of gray...it does set a precedent, but it's up to the individual judge to decide if it applies to the case or not...so a hardline conservative judge might let some law enforcement agencies get away with it, even though the law is pretty clear. then your only recourse would be to go to a higher court.

The war on drugs is over... well at least the war on weed. The electric company snitching was briefly a concern of mine before starting my first grow but after doing some googling i found a couple grow busts that happened recently in my town but it wasn't power consumption that tipped off the police it was snitches. One of the stories stated the grower got snitched on by his own son.

@sneekyhunter -- this is your very first post here at Roll It Up?? Why? I did a quick Google search after I read your post. Most of the articles that pop up about busts in 2019 are in California. Not one mentioned the use of electricity as the trigger. Looked like a lot of these busted grows were outside and they seemed to involve large operations with dozens of arrests which makes me think someone did something stupid to get caught and not their use of power. Can you offer an example? Maybe just one arrest in 2019 of a regular Joe who got busted for growing, say for their personal use, because their utility company rated them out?

I sat in a court room and listened to the power company spill the beans on how, why and when they contact police re electricity spikes and theft..
As for the choppers and cameras we got new ones and know the flyboys well ..
I also listened to how the power company through the courts charge back for stolen electricity used for growing, they double the electricity costs by miscalculating the equipments and use the example of 1000w bulb and 1000 ballast equals 2000w and the court accepts this without question..

Like I said , just a heads up..
Oh another heads up
According to a judge Landlords can be liable for what goes on in their properties..
So if any tenant is growing and they get court, the property owner is also liable..

I also sat in a court room and listened to how police raid people associated with grow operations.
It takes months but they use unattached contractors, phones and phone tools to see who talks to who and then simply tap one person on the shoulder to see who he calls after.
They also move in and park up a tech vehicle in a known grow area and capture all video of traffic to match vehicle tags with addresses and all calls in the area then triangulate to pinpoint the possible targets..
The buggers are also using new technology drone shit..

I also sat and heard how police manufacture false convictions against an informer just so they can infiltrate gangs and grow circles, one cop citing it took 3 years to do ..
The judge in this case did not like what the cops did but hey they done it..

Yes indeed, @Boatguy, nice catch. This is indeed a thing, based on a quick google search. All kinds of folk get busted for stealing electricity. My favorite is where the guy was first approached by law enforcement while sitting in a "stolen car." The article says they were already under investigation though it doesn't say the power company tipped anyone off:
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/state/florida/article237785684.html

Seems like this guy got ratted out, maybe by a neighbor. It was just a coincidence he was also stealing power. The utility didn't seem to know at first?

Here is a case were the utility DID notify the cops and while the article doesn't say, it reads like Florida may be a state that will notice if you are stealing enough power to grow "dozens of plants"

Tennessee pot cave is a perfect example of electricity theft ruining a good thing.

Can you site this? I have only seen that a landlord MAY be liable when they KNOWINGLY rent the property for illegal growing purposes.
