Heat issues

This is my first post, I have read a lot of good advice and posts in here and hope to get some replies quickly :O)
This is my set up:
Grow cab size (covered in mylar from top to bottom, air tight and isolated with 0,4 inch styrofoam)
5 ft height (1,5 foot is used for tech room + propagation room)
1,5 ft depth
3,2 ft in lenght


400 watt hps SON T Agro with stucco reflector and digital ballast
2 40 watt cfls 6700k (hanging in each ends)
2 240v fans for inlet in bottom of cabinet
1 110 cfm extractor fan with carbon filter
2 diy dwc rubber maids with 3 pots each
4 air stones + Eheim 400 air pump
2 25 watt aquarium water heaters

Crop
2 Laughing buddha (hybrid - primarily sativa)
2 Honey B (hybrid - primarily sativa)

I am currently in my 2nd grow cause I utterly burnt my first crops, cost me 4 nice seedlings. My issue is that when I turn on the hps I get 100+ Fahrenheit even though all fans are running at full power. So i ordered a cool tube, due next week, so I am only using the CFLs right now. I am in the 18/6 cycle and wondered if I could turn on the hps for 30-45 mins at a time until I get the cool tube or would that be harmful for the plants?

I'd highly appreciate any input!

Cool tube will help quite a bit, The plants still grow, just not optimally. If it does not improve like you wish, an air conditioner is fantastic. For a 400 watt, I would a 5k btu would be more than enough.

Do you think it would be a problem to run the hps with 30/45 min intervals? I dont want to mess up my current grow or the bulb, the CFL are still doing their job to some extent

Hps is mainly for flowering, most use CFL or MH to veg. You can use hps to veg it's just not the perfect light spectrum to do it, better suited as I said for flowering. So imo leave the HPS off until you flower.

So its just bogus to have bought an HPS for both grow and flower? You do follow that the bulb is an agro version with extra blue in it?

I wouldn't say that it's bogus, its just that HPS is around 2300k which is way over in the red and during veg you will need to supplement with more blue, yes, but other spectrums will help too.

You can supplement the HPS with blue light during veg and then cut it out gradually as you reach to flower. On the other hand, a good friend uses 5000 watts of bare bulb HPS, start to finish. [the Lemon Kush is phenomenal] ...and often the bulbs are really the cheapest you can find like the Phillips 1k's or the Sylvania's. Nothing to brag about.

The agro bulb is a weighted blue. They say 30% but they are only monitoring a certain amount of blue which is like 1.5% of the overall spectrum of the bulb, then multiplied by the 30%, it really is only offering about .35% more blue to the overall spectrum. I use to use them religiously.

Thx! I am using two 40 watt 6700k CFL, which were meant as a supplement, but currently they are my primary. I think the growth is a bit slower than I expected, so I really wanted to speed things up a bit. From what you're writing, I think i'll drop in some extra CFL's and see if I doesn't help.
By the way I ran the hps lights 45 mins at a time tonight, and the temperature didnt exceed 90 F, but i'll continue with this approach a couple of days more to see if there is any difference.

My guess is it is getting a lot of red and heat, the space seems to be a on the small side for a 400w light! The cfls alone may be enough till flower, then whammy.

If you can get the heat down, you will get results.

I think you are right on the size. Some grow shop wanker convinced me to buy a 400 watt, I wanted to go 250 watts but he kept talking about yield differences and shit. I have an incognito grow cabinet set up in my garage in a nice neighbourhood and I am only growing for my own pleasure, so I really dont need the large yields.
At least the electrical bill is free - I have electrical solar panels where I thought of extra panels for this purpose :O)
I may move my grow to the basement next time, and perhaps make my grow cabinet bigger by removing the propagation and tech room - would give me an extra 1,5 foot in height.

I got a cool tube and bought an MH while I was at it. Whilst installing the sucker I realised that the air flow seemed to be blowing instead of sucking. Noob that I am I had accidentally reversed the air flow when I put it in the tech room and the arrows weren't visible. Muahaha - well now I have the cool tube and things seems to work just fine and I am able to get the lights close to the plants. I think the plants are looking funny though - the leaves are big ass and a bit droopy. I have checked and the water lvl is just below the pots, the 3cm rockwool are not soaked, so I dont think they are overwatered, may just be the strain. Any input is welcome! I kinda mixed up the seeds and never bothered to tag them, so I am unsure which is which. The larger plant is the surviver from my first grow so it is more mature than the rest. Is it normal to have a sativa hybrid that is that leafy and bushy? New shoots are everywhere and I dont know if I should prune it or wait for it to grow taller to train it.
