Howdy all,
Id like to begin by saying im a noob, I have some explaining to do and then I have some questions! I have (2) outdoor grows under my belt and also (2) indoor grows successfully completed. I got a couple zips of some “official” runtz from a trusted black market supplier. Due to the smell, taste, bud structure, colors, etc... ive learned to wean out the random sacks people call Runtz just to make a sale. Found some seeds in the smoke. There were enough beans that my guess is the buds in question were pollinated and not hermied out females. Brown seeds with tiger stripes. Ive got no clue of the specific pheno, no clue of the original genetics, no clue what the possible father plants strain is, and no clue where my plug purchased said marijuana other than it comes in the mail. I have bag seeds.
I germinated 3 seeds in hopes to have at least 1 female, at the same time I germinated 2 Beans that I aquired the same way, but from a bag of GG4. I do not desire to call my plants “Runtz” or “Gorilla Glue” as I know that is technically not at all what they are. I desire to finish these plants out in hopes of getting some dank buds. Currently got everything set up in a 4x4 with a single 300w Mars Hydro LED. Temps staying between 76F and 81F with relative humidity seeming to sit around 60ish % every time im checking. Im aware that the mother strains come from 2 different backgrounds as one is a sativa dom and one is indica dom.
If I planned on tossing all the male plants except the best looking male pheno into the compost with hopes of pollinating all the remaining females for the strict purpose of seed harvest and personal smoke would the beans my girl drops be a gift of an undocumented strain? With it being impossible to know the father plant to the seeds technically the new beans i create should be a collaboration of 4 strains correct? ( whether the genetics are ass or blend kindly with eachother, i dont care im growing for the experience)
If anyone has taken the time to read my full back story, do you think im wasting my time? Will I have the seeds to my own unique strain? Will half the seeds I produce grow “non ideal” plants until I stabilize the genetics? And lastly, can i stabilize my genetics by crossing 2 strong plants Selectively chosen from a large crop of my new seeds once i have them?
Thanks for taking the time to look at my newbie approach to what i want to do for the rest of my life! :)

High there, love your name.
I only grow but I’m sure you’ll get a lot of help. Let’s ask @curious2garden or some others.

.......snip....... There were enough beans that my guess is the buds in question were pollinated and not hermied out females.
You can easily seed an entire table from hermaphrodites. We do this deliberately to make all female seeds by reversing the sex of a female to male with silver nitrate and sodium thiosulfate to produce pollen. So I wouldn't assume you have regulars.

You can call them whatever you wish.

I'd drop that humidity down about 10%

If you get all females you are going to have to reverse one to make seeds. Other than that if you get a male go for it. At least you'll have free seeds.

Nope, it's not a waste of time if you wish to do it. However I'd suggest you invest in some decent, known genetics and start breeding from there. As for stabilizing genetics you are talking about running a large number of your seeds until you get an idea what their basic genetic traits are and then you begin line breeding to establish and stabilize those traits. Again I'd purchase some genetics. But this way you'll get seeds and free smoke.
Good luck and welcome to RIU

Wow Thanks! As for seeds, I was unaware that they may not be regulars. If all of the seeds are females I will likely flower them without reversing one of the plants to a male. Id love to buy seeds but where I’m located my only option is to order them online, which I've decided against since my Op is at the location id have to get my seeds shipped to.
As for the humidity it has been flooding here for about a week so the air is a little damper than usual, (East Coast USA) I hope not to use a dehumidifier, but if I have to I plan to wait until the girls are flowering. Do you think that'd be a mistake to wait?
Lastly as for stabilizing the genetics im talking exactly of starting a bunch of the seeds, observing and noting the most common traits and grow patterns and selectively killing off the weak or less desirables. Although as you said i may not have regular seeds and without the ambition to reverse a female plant to a male, the stabilization process wont matter anyway.

You can probably get away with that humidity in veg, maybe even early flower but by mid flower you want it lower to avoid powdery mildew.

Many of us ordered seeds when things were far less friendly and we had to have them shipped internationally. Today there are many excellent US based seed banks to order from. So there's no fear of customs interception. The worst thing that happens when you order seeds is they confiscate them.

I wouldn't invest years of my life in trying to stabilize bag seed. It's hard enough from known stock. I'd encourage you to begin with reputable genetics.

Here's where the seed bank reviews live, have a look:

No it isnt a waste of time it is a learning experience, this is how most popular strains have been found.... Chemdog, OG, Girl Scout Cookies, Gorilla Glue. They were bag seed that someone gave a chance and look now!
I am doing the same thing I had 15 different bag seeds from dispensary ounces and I grew them out and 3 ended up being full on herms that I tossed out immediately, but the other 12 I have flowered out twice now with no issues and they are all dank cuts. The seed from sour d smells and looks just like sour d. The White Fire Alien. The Montana Silvertip. I thought the same as you just said. I didnt know if these were from good cuts being stressed or flowered longer to self pollinate, or if a different strain male pollinated them making new strains because with legalization of rec all the local farms were sprouting seed packs of damn near every strain and breeder and didnt know if the seeds were male or female. But my 12 keepers are similar if not identical to what I had originally purchased from the dispensary....
Just keep an eye on them because even if they end up good like my experience, they did come from a seeded female plant and like gg4 or girl scout cookies, it could most likely
throw a nanner occasionally...
But heck man if you dont try you will never know! What if it was pollinated by a male and you find a real good pheno of a new strain! You will be the only one with it!

I am also running a pack of Garlic Breath by thug pug but I figured since I had space and those seeds why not give em a shot!

The garlic and spicy strains turn me off. I swear I smoked some stuff called butter popcorn and it tasted like the movie theater haha.
I am expecting some hermie action or atleast a male or 2. I have to keep my mind moving constantly or I will fall into a state of boredom and depression. My current project is to cross a random pheno from bag seeds “RuntZ“ and “Banana Kush” to get seeds I will call “Banana KuntZ”

I'm sending good thoughts your way! Hopefully they are good seeds and not hermie seeds. I just grew 8 hermies, so now i'll be making hash I guess. If it happens to you, do the same thing, grow them out and use it for experience. I have learned a lot on this grow. got any pics of the start? They must have popped by now

For my location and my general purpose, I dont think Il grow hermies out. Most likely transfer them outdoors and turn them to Rosin this fall. I am hoping they are all viable females, Ive had a lot more experience vegging than flowering. ( because I always use bag seeds so around half of my plants are males ) I think I do have some pictures from the start. These girls had a nitrogen deficiency in the beginning. This is the first grow I have used more than my good ol Uncle for advice. Hes a far out dude, used to grow plants in 5 gallon buckets and hang em from oak trees way above peoples sight range to never get caught. Ahahahahah
Thanks for sending positive vibes, Im sure theyre making their way through the cosmos as we speak! :) pictures attached below from random times through out their life so far.

The girls are looking good bro! On my first grow they all turned out to be males, 4 GG4. But you are right i learned a lot, I combated gnats, mold, and thrips! I did learn a lot to carry over to my next grow. What are ya feeding them?20191111_141739.jpg20191026_190320.jpg20191026_215946.jpg

Thanks, they’re currently being fed Fox Farms base line.
That last picture you attached is some real high quality man. I may even start growing males instead, that shit looks down right delicious!
