HELP FAST!: seedlings growing too tall!?

on about the 6th day for my seedlings and they seem to be growing too tall (3-4 inches tall) and are maybe a little weak as the stems aren't quite straight (as i understand, spacing between the top soil and first node is indicative of how the buds will be spaced, therefore it would be ideal to keep the space close so the plant is denser).
I read about this before and found that i needed to lower the lights so they aren't growing in search of more light, and that seemed to slow the growth yesterday, but today they seem a bit taller than they should once again. Please, if you have experience with this problem and a good solution, send me some tips.

we have two, what i think are called dome lights, that are about 125 to 150 watts and i lowered them further today. it seems like the heat is a little too much with them so close but the plan is just to try it out and see how it goes obviously. thanks for the help guys, any other ideas?

dome lights? never heard of em, hopefully they aren't umbrella fixtures, but yeah even a few inches closer will help out a lot

If the light is too hot on your hand from the tops of the plants then it does not need to be close. You need to know what light you are using the dome really dont tell me much.My guess is use some cfls or floros it will work better and you can keep it close with little heat.

it's a type of reflector, it looks like an umbrella and is extremely inefficient, idk if you have that i was just saying..

If your lights are giving off a lot of heat they will stretch the plant even when close to the top of the foliage. You should use 2-4 24w CFL for seedlings and clones until they are ready for transplant. Don't know what a dome light is, but if they are incandescent fixtures this could be the problem.
The distance from the soil to the first set of leaves has nothing to do with the inter-nodal spacing of the plant. This is determined by genetics and the light intensity, temperature, and moisture in the grow area. When transplanting to the final growing pot, bury the stem to 1/2 in below the first leaves and like the above posters said, it will root from the newly planted stem.

I would not worry. At least you have ones that want to grow. I don't think it is true that between the soil and first internode is the pattern for the rest of the plant. Be careful about putting the lights too close when they are that small.

so i looked at the lights and there is one 150 watt and one 130 watt, the other thing they both said was "reflector" and "flood"

what it seems like to me as im reading the posts is it could be a heat problem. the plants dont seem to be to be heat stressed or anything but it feels rather warm in there. also there is one that seems to be bent a bit (without touching). i feel as if there is plenty of light, so it could be just a heat issue, which in that case maybe its best to keep the lights a bit higher... or buy new ones
