True 125 watt CFL or a 250 watt HPS. Either will do. CFL runs cheaper, cooler and is cheaper to buy. HPS gives a better yield IMO.

most importantly what sort of space? you said one plant but that could be as small as 1 square foot or as big as 1 square metre or more even. space is more important than plant numbers for estimating lighting

150 HPS should be fine for one plant and are easier with heat. I flower 3 girls at a time in my 2*2 with a 250 hps with great results but i think that would be overkill for most people growing 1 plant.

My suggestion ... 400 watt switchable ballast and a bulb each for MH and HPS. You can grow one good-sized plant under that. cn

I started out with a 150 watt HPS with T12's on the sides. grew some good bud with that setup. Then added another 150. then added a 400. then added another 400. LOL Now I use 2 400's the 150's are for backup or auto's. It's good to have more than one light in case one breaks. But back to your question, you can get a 150 hps for about $75 deliverd, you cant get anything else for that price that kicks out that many lumens.

you can eg and flower w/ a 250 but i would go with the 400w if anything. second when i started growing it was with t12(florescent) hinestly if this is your first grow i would grow a few small plants under a 4' 6 bulb t5, less heat to think about and simpler design all around.

basically more lumens (what light produces), more buds.. Main issue is heat because higher power= more heat so as 2easy mentioned space is big factor... Extraction is needed with a 400 for sure unless space is big ,, people use cfl due to less heat generally... Also blue spectrum bulb for veg and red for flower dude.. Good luck

Go with the switchable 400, get a 8 inch vented hood and a 8 inch Vortex inline fan!! It will cost you a little up front but you will be happy in the end!!
