Help needed and appreciated: First timer w/ a few questions!

Yo. First time grower that's growing from bagseed for experience (before shelling out the bucks on the more exotic seeds). Anyway, I have a transplanting question. I've some semi-new sprouts that have just started growing their second set of fan leaves (not including the rounded first set when first sprouting), the second set of fan leaves are about half the size of the first set and I need to know the time window when I'll need to ditch the plastic cups in favor of pots. They've been growing for a week if that helps any.

question 2]

My other plant was started the same time, in the same soil type, same watering schedule, same amount of light (growing in a screened in window seal) --it's just as tall as the other plant (which is thriving MUCH better than I was expecting) but the first set of fan leaves are severly under developed and I need to know what to do? The pH is between and 6.8-7.0 and the soil is Expert Gardener Organic Mix all purpose potting soil ( 6-9-6) w/ slow release nitrogen --could it be a nitrogen defficientcy or what? The underdeveloped were a light green to yellow when they first grew, but they're taking a healthier green color towards towards the stalk. So what's up? Thanks in advance!

the roots are the key. check the bottom, if there seem to be a good amount of roots around the drain holes then repot asap. i would bet you need to by now...

The best advice I can give you is get quality soil, and use ALOT of vermiculite it needs to be VERY airy, and drain VERY well. It couldn't hurt to transplant into a 4 in container now. Wet your soil so it sticks together good, squeeze your cups gently and put the plant between your fingers and flip it over...if its root bound slice the swirls at the bottom in about 4 places so the roots will start to seek new places to fill. Good luck and good growing.

also Id stay away from any time release formula ...use a high quality soil like Foxfarm Happy Frog, mix it 50/50 with vermaculite, Oxygen makes for happy roots...Happy roots make happy plants....Happy plants make big Tomatoes.

Ah. Ok. Thanks for the responses. I just wish there was a plant store around here... You'd think it'd be easy to find one in Alabama. Go figure...

Best of luck. I would wait another week and get them into new pots. If you have to go with MG soil I think alot of people recomend their organic mix. By waiting you give the roots more time to fill the cup making it easier to transplant. MORE importantly it gives you time to read and find some good soil. If you are using party plastic cups, I suggest a pair of sterile scissors and cutting the cups to fold open easily.

There may be more places than you think to get soil. Try different manufacturers websites for "store locators" I used this Premier Horticulture – PRO-MIX growing mixes & Peat Moss: The ultimate growing performance

The hands on experience you are gaining is invaluable. If you are gonna smoke and grow you might want to take notes :)
