if you are really interested in growing, the first thing you should do before purchasing grow equipment is read read read. there are tons of threads here on riu that will help you understand the cannabis plant and how it grows, but trial and error is the best way to learn. growing herb is alot like any other plant, they all need food water and light to survive. and a growing medium of course...
growing medium - soil or hydroponics, for beginners i suggest organic soil or a seed starter mix. that way you know exactly what nutrients your plant is getting, and you don't have to feed small seedlings for the first 2-3 weeks.
food - fertilizer comes in lots of brands, i also suggest 100% organic fertilizer. organic is best for beginners because chemicals can burn your plants if you aren't careful. just follow the feeding instructions on the back of the bottle.
light - sunlight is always better than artificial light, but not everyone can grow outdoors. light is the most important part of growing any plant. without enough light the plant will produce small flowers or even worse, wilt and die. Most indoor growers use Metal Halide (MH) lamps in the vegitative/growth stage of a plant and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are best for the flowering stage. You can use 1 or the other, or if you are on a budget you can also use CFL/florescent bulbs, but if you are on a budget I suggest not growing weed lol.
water - a steady watering schedule is just as important as light when it comes to a plant's survival. under-watering a plant will cause it to dry up and wilt, and over-watering can cause it to droop and rot the roots. when growing in soil, just give them enough water so that it drains out of the bottom of the pots, and only water every few days after it has evaporated and the soil is completely dry.
this is just a very basic rundown of what a plant needs to grow, but there is alot more to take in account like temperature and humidity and pH levels. that's where the reading comes in handy

good luck
