help! studs cant support my 600w hps for some reason...

im SURE i found a stud. (110% sure...) but for some reason it cant hold my hps...i was adjusting the height yesterday and it simply came out of the ceiling (hook & all).

so right now im back to using cfls...but i have 7 plants flowering...(6 in the early stages)

i cant last without being able to use my hps for too long...

so im looking for a light hanger (one that does NOT mount on the ceiling)...

i need one that is free standing so i dont have to worry about my hps crashing out of the ceiling...this is 2nd time this has happened (thank god i caught it both times).

need some help on finding one in a reasonable price range.

there's no way a 2x4 couldn't support the weight of a grow light. you either didn't hit the stud or you didn't get the screw into the wood. try again. seriously if your ceiling can't hold 20 pounds then i'd get the fuck out that house cause it's about to collapse.

If you got a stud it would hold...unless you predrilled a hole to large, or not a good enough hook.
Its not rocket science to hang a light from a ceiling, I have not a clue what you are doing but your doing something wrong.

Make sure your using a drill bit that's at least an 1/8" smaller than the diameter of the threads on the hook.

well i tried...and tried...and tried...for some reason every stud finder gives me a "positive reading" that i've found a stud but when i get a tiny nail in there to see (it shouldnt just slide right in and out unless i missed the stud)....so i tried for like an hr with and without the stud finder...

so i just wanna skip the headache of having to worry if my light is going to come crashing down on top of my ladies...

so i was hoping someone could point me to a link to an effective but inexpensive hanger/stand that is free standing for $100 or less (or less would be greaT).

please let me know..

and im certain it was in the stud as when i put the nail in it didnt come right out...but it did when i adjusted it and i swear i wasnt pulling down on it hard or nothing...actually i was raising it...damn thing came right out and i barely caught it...

i dont wanna damage anything from a broken hps so thats y i ask about the hanger.

If you can't find a stud I don't know how to help you -_- Not to be rude but it is not hard. Your best bet is to build a light hanger for under 100$ but if you can't find a stud you can't do this. I don't know what else to say :lol:

Well you still need to hit a stud...and depending on where the room is you could be putting some long ass screws where you don't want to.

yeah you need to hit a stud.he can just look in the attic and see which way the studs run and how far apart they are. thats what I would do. and they have to be flush with the dry wall or there would be no way that it would be sturdy

there is no way that your in a stud!!!

When your sliding your stud finder across the wall and it light's up that's the edge of the stud make a small mark, continue sliding the stud finder it should stay lit up for about 1 1/2'' then when the lights go back off thats the other edge. Now drill your hole in between the two edge's and it will hold!!!

I would probably use around 2 1/4'' screws so that if your dry wall is a 1/2'' you still have 1 3/4 in the wood. It will be solid!! You should be able to hang from it

buy a shower pole that extends wall to wall. you know what i mean if you have a shower curtain? it will hold everything! if not hammer & or screw a piece of wood under each side of the pole for support? catch my drift man?
