grow stores are very plentiful nowadays..find a decent one with good ratings and well known..
3 in 3 gallon pots..400w would do you good. or if you can afford to have a loud fan running.. 600w. louder 1000w. be prepared for the heat its going to give off and the noise from the fan to move it. the dial a watt/ digital ballasts that can dial from 600w to 400w to 250w.. and 1000 600 400 i think ..and switchable metal halide /hps are good buying points..will you ever want more light? bigger area? smaller? its useful.

and miracle grow is suggested against...as it usually has time release nutrients in it..making feeding a bit difficult to say the least.. i like to go as big a pot size as possible too..if you have room for 5gallons or 7 gal its worth it.

yea the digital ballast would be the one i would get since i do want to make my grow area bigger and have higher watts ... and for the other two i planted them in flexi mix...would it be better to grow them all in coco?

There are so many good deals on switchable ballasts and hoods... ipower seems to be the economy line, but I heard they are ok. I have a Solistek and it is supposed to be very good. I got it for $100 on Craigslist with the hood. Just make sure it's a switchable electronic ballast that supports both MH and HPS.

Hoods can be very large as compared to a small grow space. I have a Luminaire hood. It is awesome, but it doesn't really fit in my tent. They are 25 inches wide so be aware. Make sure it is a good hood because it's important that it is properly sealed. Otherwise you will be pulling unpurified air through the hood and bypassing your carbon filter. To combat this you could always push air from your fan and make the filter the last thing in the lineup.
Get the aircooled hood. Forget the uncooled reflectors even though they are cheaper. Cool tubes can be ok I understand, but I say get a good hood. The worst thing is to buy something and use it for a few weeks then buy something else.

4" fans don't make much sense since not many air cooled hoods have 4" vents. Go for the 6" fan. And yes, they make a lot of noise. There are ways to combat this though.

Think about where you will blow the heat. i may have cut a hole in the wall from my second bedroom to my living room where the heat is exhausted out the sliding door. I have heard of people pumping the heat into their bathroom fan. It's a lot of heat though so be prepared.

If you buy a 600w ballst (and I would if I were you) Make sure that if you are running it on 400 (Which is likely enough light for 3 plants) That you are using a 400w bulb. Don't try to just turn down your 600w bulb to 400w. The spectrum of the light will be affected.

I just looked at GalaxyHydro.. Way too expensive. I wouldn' pay $400 for a setup. I power has a decent starter setup for $150.
