help with first time grow

Hard to say with those photos because I can't see any resin sparkle but if you planted in April they should be fairly close to ready, unless you're growing one of those tropical sativas like Thai or Hawaiian. If they're not in danger of being stolen, I'd let them go until mid-October or later. Wait until the big leaves on the plants start to dry up or turn yellow or brown. Now as to precise timing, my method is to look at the "hairs" that grow out of the flowers. If they have all turned red and shriveled up, you can usually get a good buzz off of the buds. Some people go by the color of the resin, but I have a hard time seeing stuff that small, so I go by the red hairs and how sticky and stinky the buds are.

Red hairs aren't the best way to tell. Go on amazon and get you a lil 25x jewelers scope to see the trichomes. 50/50 amber/milky. I got mine for like 3 bucks.
