Ok call me cheap, thrifty, tighter than a froggs ass, whatever; I want to make kelp meal instead of dishing $ for pre made stuff.
Question 1: Can i use kelp/ seaweeds from good ole coast of maine? What type?
Question 2: Is the process to make kelp meal just washing with fresh water, drying and grinding?
Thanks NSB

You can gather kelp from the shore. As i understand it, the process of extracting the salt is more involved than simple rinsing.

You are allowed to harvest 50 pounds a day in Maine. If you want to harvest more than that a day, you are supposed to get a seaweed harvesting licence.

Are you going to mix it into your soil right from the start?
I'm going to rinse it again tomorrow morning then put it out to dry. After that im going to grind it or break it up. Then I'm going to put it in a soil recipe im making instead of kelp meal.

I'm thinking it's still gonna be salty...
Probably, but that's how people here on riu have done it, so shall i. Some folks don't even wash it before putting it into their garden. I soaked my kelp in fresh water overnight, stirring it up a few times, then rinsed it 2 more times this morning.

After 3 days of collecting kelp and seaweed from the shore I would guess we had 100 pounds wet. Layed it out in the sun to dry. After it dried up like beef jerky, I'd say there is less than 5 pounds.
