Sorry, I wasn't talking about your setup. I meant any existing ducting that is in use by something else.
 
I installed a 4" dryer vent and reduced down my 6" exhaust. Works like a charm and looks like it belongs there.

If the vent goes from closet to outside (like you can see everything going on inside it and its not going anywhere else) there is no reason not to use it.
