Help with ventilation!

Hi guys new to this whole growing thing, but very intereseted and keen to learn

Im about to be starting my first one in a grow room, ive been doing lots and lots of research and i have everything pretty much planned out, even the type of fan and size, but just setting it all up is what is confusing me.


Lets say I make a hole somewhere near the ground ( like say the door? ) for intake which will also be connected to the lights with an aluminum connector, than I get a 6" exhaust fan (400 CFM) for outtake and i mount it in the wall which will lead outside , which will than also connect to the lights im using ( 1000 watt HPS),
and than i just have a regular fan facing the plants and lights for stronger stems aswell as cooling the room/lights.

Would this by any chance work? if not please give me advice on how to properly set it up and it would be greatly appreciated.

yeah that should work. if you're air cooling your lights make sure to seal off the vents from the rest of the room with tape or with those steel bands you tighten with a flat head(forgot actual name). i don't know if your running an intake and exhaust to the room or not but you'll probably want an ac unit regardless to bring temps down because your room will still get hot.

Also, nobody knows what the rest of your environment variables are...these are things that you just have to try on your own to get the answers you really need. Trial and error are the best mentors.

Well I live in canada and winter is around the corner, i also have my own place so im not worried about security and its only 10 plants and 1 1000 watt HPS which are non air cooled.

As far as the intake port, there is no need to connect it to the exhaust. I would cut a small rectangle near bottom and screen it (bugs and rat prevention) also tape a "flap" to the top, as to allow air, but not light into the room. The reverse pressure from the exhaust will pull the outside air through the hole(s), and any cracks.

Next, since you no longer have the intake and exhaust mixed. Buy a Can filter to eliminate the smell. Attach a small amount of flex pipe to it, then attach the pipe to the light. Hang them both. Keep the bends of the pipe to a minimum, no sharp curves either- it kills the CFM.

Now, attach the exhaust fan (preferably on the outside-to reduce heat) of the grow room wall towards the top, that way as the plants grow and you raise the light, your distance gets shorter instead of longer. Again. Keep the bends and the length of pipe to a minimum, the more distance, the more pressure and less suction. If you can use hardpipe instead of flexpipe. you will help yourself a good bit, but not imperative.

I prefer 2 fans in opposite corners to circulate the air. I usually have them pointed right on plants early, then above, below and around canopy as buds get bigger.

Air circulation is super important to prevent mold and powder mildew. a crowded room, and/or bad circulation of air from the base of the pots to the exhaust causes excess humidity under and around the plants. This is why people with lots of exhaust and fans still get mold/mildew, because of air movement. if all the leaves flutter at one point or another as the fan moves, you are ok-if not, move the fans.

Aside from that you seem to be on a good track. Heath has a good picture of the CFM's you need with the light and who much the temp will change. Its in his portfolio. Ill see if i can find it and repost it.

wait, the light is not air cooled? Then how are you hooking the exhaust to it? Are you using an adjust-a-wing? They are the best.

If you cannot run the exhaust through the light, then hook it directly to the can filter and hang the can filter a little above the light, in the upper part of room- since heat rises :) You will want a small fan or 2 to blow directly at the light then, as well as 1-2 to circulate room.

I have a 6.5x6.5x6.5 room with a 1000w air cooled, 1 300w LED and a 6" exhaust fan & 2 oscillating fans and it never peaks above 78. I also only have 5 plants in there at a time. 9 plants got it too hot. they insulate a lot of heat.

If you have the cash, upgrade to an 8" exhaust fan. It will do you a lot of good. I like http://www.thelashop.com - go to gardening accessories section- they have a can filter and exhaust fan combo for cheap. $289 for the 20" filter and $320 for the 32" filter with 740CFM 8" fan. cheaper than my grow stores

I actully wasnt sure how I was going to hook them together :P, So your saying connect the filter and exhaust together, connected by flex pipes which go into the wall? And the room is 10 x 10 x 10
