Hey , Dummy Grow a Plant - Simple Soil Container Growing

It can be a “ water only “ container grow with interval top dressing ( soil or dry fertilizer ) … you are just maintaining the nute levels that the plant has exhausted. I don’t run into “ root bound issues with any particular size I run , as I up pot only the initial plug ( solo ) . That way I can choose the finish container size and keep doing things simply.

Everyone has their preferences - I only highlight mine. I would rather show others there is no reason to buy 15 bottles of overpriced stuff when a well balanced living soil stops the drama. Plus keeps money in your pocket. Sure there are alternatives to FFOF and would think methods would be the same. Much easier to work grows having less hands - on. Even the water source I use …. Cali TAP water. Probably has some hobo pee , gutter runoff and whatever nowadays but my lawn still grows on it. Almost fell for the ” special “ water way of thinking years ago - but my tomato plants didn’t need it so why should an indoor plant require it.

As long as I control the feed - I really don’t get too many issues. I have more problems controlling working temps over plant itself.

I just prefer 2 gallon / 3 gallon sizes as I tend to run multiples and i like strain varieties over growing a one strain tree. I am always experimenting with soil blends - non cooking - ready to use. Even in my discarded plants ( cut roots ) I leave hardly any unused soil. And when I do scrape some leftover soil , it is re-used in solo cups for new germination.

Not very hard to maintain a controlled feed in any size container - I even used Jobe spikes when I ran out of supplies.

aah ok gotcha I thought you were trying to not add ANYTHING but water the whole grow through in that size. With this you should be good to go! I also don't subscribe to salt nutrient based stuff... I do still use build a soil inputs though .. so I still pay a lot but they last forever and I can keep using the same soil over and over. Can't wait to see what you cook up!

Buddha Blend :

Soil :

Fox Farms Ocean Forest
Recipe 420 potting

Any good RTU ( ready to use ) soils available at retail / hydro stores or nursery , but check the ingredients listed on label.
Cheap soil will have lots of crappy fillers and subpar element sources , so use good soil from the start. Some peat based soils will need more amendments upfront , so is this why to keep things simple and direct , I will only use the soils listed.

Container :

Dealer’s choice :bigjoint:

Method will work on any size container or bag. 1/2/3/5 gallon .
Container volume size will also factor in on how long base medium will be feeding before recharging. I run 1 gallon SOG and 2-3 Gallon bags.
5 gallon buckets can run in the same manner.

Step 1 :

Add up to 1/3rd of container volume size of Ocean Forest - this layer of soil will be the most nute dense for plant. Ocean Forest is one of the most nute charged ready to use bagged soils out there. Although you can simply , run a full container of FFOF right out of the bag , some younger plants can be overwhelmed and show some nute burning. My method allows root mass to take advantage of the more mild mix above this layer .
Using your ready to transplant solo cup can give you an idea of base medium depth.

Step 2 :
Add coarse perlite / pumice or rice hulls. I chose to use #3 size perlite . I prefer this over the smaller standard and dustier size.
Mix throughly - break up clumps.

Step 3 :

Here is the magic layer . Add myco ( your brand choice ) - mist with water. You are jump starting the myco activity :weed:

Modifications :
Add Kelp Meal / DTE Biolive or Granular Humic Acid . This is used when I run long grow sativas ( autos or photo ) to supercharge .
Kelp ( liquid ) approximately a capful per gallon of water is another fantastic option done at intervals . Once a week paired with normal watering.
It works incredibly well during flower all without those stupid boosters and sweetners. Kelp is highly concentrated in growth hormones and micronutrients.

Budzilla, I followed this setup, using FFOF on the bottom, with a dusting of myco, a little Gaia 4-4-4 on top of the FFOF. Except I used Fox Farm Coco Loco potting mix on the top. Will it work?

I posted pics in autoflowers, asking if it was ready to be topped. I posted what I’m using, and two responses said I might have issues.

Can you advise if it’ll work, or what you think I’ll need in order to prepare for said issues?

Only one way to find out bongsmilie

I never used coco loco so not sure - it seems to be blended for “ water retention “ . It has EWC and bat guano - so nitrogen is covered but not much else other than kelp meal. So not sure it is nute charged enough. You may have to supplement a dry fertilizer- DTE all purpose 4-4-4 or similar to have more elements for plant to utilize.

It’s the water holding that kind of kills it for me. But good luck …. Let us know how it pans out.

If I wanted to maximize the number of plants in my space and do straight from germination to 12/12 how big of a pot would I need.
I think I would have enough space to test run all my stock at once if 3 gallon pots will be sufficient

Look at SOG style growing.

How do you water where you don't have run off but have plenty for the plant.

I got some Clones that had been Topped had them couple weeks but they act like their not getting enough water.

I did some messing with them today and seemed they were wet enough but I put some Green Onions around them and put some more soil in and waterd them some more.

Then flipped them.

.........that topping early..does that create stronger stems as it grows in that stage?? Looks like some strong indicas there
High end seeds? My plants usually come out strong as they advance but never that young..I always use supports. How important are genetics?
Do you have a thread on THC and terp production.??........assuming one has MJ and not hemp plants!

Topdress Time :

Figured i would update on my plants. Still powering along on just the base layered mix and that single topdressing i did awhile ago - so now is their second topdressing.

Seriously- look at their color and health - No fucking cartoon bottles of overpriced shit - No “ cannabis “ specific nutes ( whatever that means ) - No Ph of water source ( straight TAP / no gas off ).

If you treat your weed like a common houseplant , there will be little to worry about.

Although i do talk about FFOF a bit - i will give it props for what it can do all by itself. Haters are still gonna nitpick this medium but proof is in the pudding.

Also - look at the fabric pots ….. do you see heavy salt staining like you would get from bottles?

Fox Farm should put on label : KEEP SHIT SIMPLE.

Although i lost a few of the original plants from this thread to hermie / male , even those were quite healthy.

Today’s topdressing should keep them happy for a couple weeks until another topdress.

Those are perfect little stout bushy green plants.....strong looking with no supports, thick ass stems in 2gal pots
High end genetics ??
I don’t look at genetics as “ high end “ … if there is such a thing , I look at the parental lines used. I don’t fall for dumbass drops on IG or some bullshit boutique weed ( titty sprinkle gumdrop or some other Frankenstein mashup. Sad thing nowadays is a “ new breeder “ coming on the scene would be one that takes an already worked strain ( basically stealing somebody’s work ) and either gets 2 two feminize and make seeds - claim some new superstar strain with a catchy name.

I like original cuts - do some investigating since lines are so diluted. There are good well known breeders and tend to stay with those that produce good plants - I like Mephisto / Night Owl / Ethos / Hazeman / BomB / etc.

But I experiment too - I run ‘ testers ‘ from certain people - some good , some shit . So , I decided to make my own S1 seeds.

2 of those plants are from a seed making run i did awhile back … started with a self pollination of a Hazeman Seeds King Kong Poison ( Durban Poison x GG4 ) which is a fine one to run. So instead of “ buying ‘ I tried selfing a female to female. Got a shitload of seeds and run them all the time.

You can’t go wrong with the Durban Poison part …. It’s a killer smoke. I find some variations in these first gen seeds ( mostly purp phenos from time to time ). Anyways , these are my go to plants for pretty much every grow - I always gave one or two going.

IMG_9970.jpegIMG_8697.jpeg

This is the 2 fems I crossed ( left one sprayed with CS / got ladynuts ) - ( Right one is the mom seed maker. )
Once the left cup dropped pollen , I pollinated the right one completely - pollen plant tossed.
Then I grew it out as a normal plant but just give me seeds.

I got so sick of the candy/cookie, questionable-parentage (when "defined") nonsense. I look for heirloom indications ("I worked this line for ten years.") and keep an eye out for known strains (which are hard to find, and who knows if they're genuine).

Ultimately, I have ended up starting to work my own lines based on scant genetic background information and personal preference. I figure if I like it, and the seeds produce similar offspring - yay!

I have started to think I'm not even interested in "keepers" if the genetics aren't "stable."

I wish I knew more about breeding and had resources to grow hundreds of seeds at a time.

....geez you even have healthy looking seeds........ looks more like peanuts

......I really don't need seeds, I started out with regular autos for past 6yrs
.....but I'm wondering?.. if what I'm smoking is really fire. Might be just some bullshit compared to something else!
I think I need to just calm my need to find the golden goose strain and just do new strain small 1 pack grows here and there mixing with strains I already have in much much smaller batches!

I totally get what you are saying about getting something “ fire “ and end up meh .

But i found out if smoking it wasn’t all that , try it in another consumable form - Tincture / edible / hash

I had this Dark Devil strain once - Dark beautiful plant - purply black leaves - Dark purps and blues … pretty bitch. But ….. rolled up and smoked - weak sauce.

So instead of wasting my time smoking it - i pressed it . And made carts ( with a “ juice kit “ from 760glass ) plus some tincture. That was like night and day.

So bottom line - try a different way to consume
