The attic isn't the best place for a grow, what with coppers and their helicoppers. The heat signature, even on the smallest of lamps is a dead give away.
That being said, people do, and if I'm honest I would if I had to.
Try an auto strain? Small, fast, and should give you a good/painless first grow.

First off how are you going to cool it? Attics get hot as hell. Your plant will be mush fast.

Please god no! Not another frig grow. They almost never work out
I had plans for one some day...if I ever scale my grow down....which I probably won't

As long as you can keep the attic cool enough it'd be fine. All about ventilation/air movement/temps (that's no matter where you grow though).
With that said, if you're only growing one plant, surely you can find a more stable environment than the attic?
What strain do you think you're gonna grow? How long do you plan on vegging it? I've seen a lot of people on here have success with rubber maid grows. Fairly cheap to set up, too, from what I can gather anyways.
EDIT: With attics you don't only have to worry about heat, but sometimes cold too as they tend not to be insulated as well as the main house, if at all. So a cold climate isn't exactly your friend with an attic grow, more friendly than a hot climate though I suppose.

I say give it a try, see if you have any luck. Can't hurt (under normal circumstances).

Upper right click "my rollitup", then on the left hand side, in the column there's "edit avatar". You change it in there.
lol i was thinking that to.. or use one of the freezer chests to do a sog. mount adjustable hight Flo lights on lid add a fan and should be good as gold.. no one know unless they went lookin for a pizza or something lol.
herd dooin in attic is bad, high heat and humidity... i know ours sucks 10-20 degrees warmer on hot sunny days in attic compaired to outdoor.

The real problem with frigs is they are designed to keep heat out and cold in. But if you put heat inside what happens. Heat stays in. And when do manage to get it so temps and humidity isn't bad. Your a million miles from stealth. You can do a search on the subject. There has been many threads.
