HID lamps for seedlings?

They are fine. Your temps look on the low side though. 12C is a bit too low for good growth! (I'm assuming 55F is your night time temperature?)

Yes 55f is night temp. But it only dipped to that once because ccold night as heat upstairs waswnt on. Usually it only gets to 57f-59f or a little bit better.

Would 30-36 inches for my 1000w mh be overkill, I.e. harm my plants in any way? The temps shouldent go anything above 77ish for sure. I been having them under my 500watts for 5 dys, so I figure they can def handle it, right?

You might want to consider moving the light closer to the seedlings ( and possibly turning up the wattage ) so that they don't stretch. As I mentioned above, place your hand palm down at the top of your seedling. If it's too hot for you, it will be too hot for your plants. Currently I have a 1000W HPS that is about 24" from the tops of my plants, the seedlings are under the same light. If they do stretch then plant them in a bigger pot with the cotyledons approx. 1" above the soil. Good Luck, Larry

Exactly what I was thinking....

if u have other plants under your HID's then it isn't a waste of energy but if you're firing up all that wattage for your seedlings then it's wasted energy. also don't put seedlings under 400 or 600 watts right away. harden them off by gradually making them closer and giving them a longer duration. the key word being "gradual".

Just posting follow up pics of my seedlings grown under 1000w HID. I agree with the argument that it is cheaper to veg under another light source but in my belief it is a short term savings that is costly to the long term benefit of the plant. Have a great day everyone, Larry

The plants above ^^^^^ are @ 9 days from sprouting. Below are the same plants now @ 14days. I will continue to post for a couple of more weeks but using HID from the time it breaks ground gives your seed plants this kind of jump start. I will be topping these before the next photos as they are already at the 5th and 6th set of leaves. Happy Growing :weed:

Same plants 11 days later (over)ready for final transplant and another 2-3 weeks of veg. Happy Growing and don't forget to use your HID to give your seedlings this kind of start :weed:

PS These plant have been topped twice now and will get and additional topping in about 10 days 2 weeks or so before switching to 12/12

I generally leave my seedlings under flourescent until the sucker leaves open up, 12-24 hrs after breaking soil then right into the MH.
Sometimes I will have a seedling slow to germ/break soil and the others are already in the MH. In that case, I go straight to the MH.

NOW, from time to time, I will have a seedling bleach and not like the MH at all. So yeah, I prefer to use the flourescent first.
