HID question

So i just got a 400watt HPS for my flowering girls. there in a 3x3 closet the light is rated to cover 8-20 sqft. but im only using 6 sqft. So my question is How far from the hood should the plants be? And thx in advance for any and all help...

As close as you can get it without the plants being too hot, use the back of the hand test, or get an air cooled reflector and get it really close for some dense ass buds :d

Well it is a 6'' vented hood but i havent hooked all that up yet. I have one plant thats prob like 6 inches from the hood and i did the hand test and its not really hot i mean its warm but not uncomfterble. so i should have them like maybe a foot or wat?

a foot sounds like a good spot to me, just play around with it a little bit and listen to what your plants want--they'll never lie to you
