High efficiency lights...

Some buddies of mine said that they've seen hps lights that are 'high-efficiency' to the point that they output lumens like a normal 1000w bulb but only use 500w from the wall. Can anyone attest to this?

Are there other sizes like this?

actually im doing research on that now. they are called low pressure sodium bulbs. if any one has any info on LPS bulbs please post. Looks like they are supposed to have the same ora lil better spectrum but put out almost 200 lms/watt. i'll get back at cha when i find out

thanks! this makes sense. a 1000w bulb will always use 1000w from the wall, but it could output twice the lumens thereby making it twice as efficient. Let me know if you find out something!

The new electronic ballast vs the old core and can.

The new electronic ballast are more effecent and produce more light and less heat.

More light comes from the fact that a 1000w core uses 75 w just to start the system. Electronic does not.

I have replaced 2 1000w with 4 400w in the veg room and I like that I have less heat to get rid off and more light. Lower cost.

Excuse me, but weren't "Low Pressure Sodium" bulbs prooved to be bullshit at least a couple of years ago? There was a lot of hype about them being "The next Big Thing", (much like LED's). I notice that niether one of them has "risen to the top" yet.

Perhaps bullshit is too strong a word, but still - low pressure sodium lights are like a ghost from the past.

LPS lamps have an extremely narrow color spectrum. 590nm is pretty much the only color they put out. They're basically monochromatic.





Not suitable for plants, IMO. Although very efficient, they're not available in the high wattage common in horticulture. 180w and 32,000 lumens is the most you can get from LPS, AFAIK. LPS (which has been around since before WWII) has largely been left by the wayside for the more versitile HPS lamp.
