High Times 2013 MMMP Cannabis Cup?!?

Well guys, it doesn't look like High Times will return to Michigan this year

I was thinking of a "write in campaign" to High Times to host a 2013 event here in Michigan.

More specifically, Ann Arbor. I think Hash Bash 2013 would be an awesome time to start an annual High Times event here. The 42nd annual Hash Bash will be held Saturday April 6, 2013 at high noon followed by an evening at the Monroe Street Fair.

As far as governmental issues, Ann Arbor has very lenient laws regarding the possession of marijuana–a $25 fine for the first offense, a $50 fine for the second offense, and a $100 fine for the third (and subsequent) offense—and is a simple civil infraction rather than a criminal offense, such as misdemeanor or felony. This is why the Hash Bash began and became a national legend. I cannot think of a better place!

Sad to say, but the Hash Bash really could use a good boost in people. Attendance there has had a resurgence following the 2009 medical MMMP victory here in Michigan, but has already hit it's peak. Check out the stats:

The 2009 Hash Bash on April 4th had an estimated 1600 attendees.

The 2010 Hash Bash on April 3rd had an estimated 5000 attendees.

The 2011 Hash Bash on Apr 2nd had an estimated 6000-6500 attendees.

The 2012 Hash Bash on April 7th had an estimated 5500 attendees.

What do you think guys, could we do it here?!?

Or just leave them out of it and keep it local and without all off the High Times bullshit. Sure they have been an source of information for years but they also have a reputation for conducting themselves like fools and not keeping up on there end of the bargain with hosts. Not to mention if Arjan ending winning a Michigan cup I'm not sure if I would piss myself laughing or just puke! Why does it have to be so formal, lets throw fat parties every chance we get and the winners will shine through!

I hear ya guys, but High Times marketing is unparalleled in the industry and can make things happen. I guess we have to take the bad with the good and don't forget they are a bunch of stoners :bigjoint:

It really would be nice to have a major MMMP event here in Michigan to showcase our skillz :weed:

How hard is it for a few of us to send an email to hteditor@hightimes.com :?:

If we make enough noise we'll learn why they did not come back to Detroit in 2012 and/or if they have anything in the works for Michigan in the future.

Good luck man. They won't do hash bash cause they do Denver 4/20. They make so much $ there, they wouldnt waste their time planning and holding two events when one is obviously more profitable and in a state fully backing the movement, not the half ass way ours does.

I think they want our collective Michigan shit to get together before they come back. We had the issues with the medicating areas and everything else once the cops showed. On top of the fact that when that cup happened it was right after the appellate court ruling and all the dispeneseries were shut down. Then of course our lovely attorney general.

This is true. Bad timing for sure! It's going on a couple years now so hopefully the collectives are more prepared. If they start a Cannabis Cup in Ann Arbor, one can also hope the government and police will be more accommodating.

Going on a couple years since that? The Detroit cup was less than a year ago. Schute's wonderful decreement was a year and a week ago.

Like I said. Good luck. If they come back it will be fall 2013. Seattle took our spot. As it should have in the first place. MI wasn't ready for it.

I received a response today from High Times Editor Mary C. McEvoy:

Hi Tom,

We did look at Ann Arbor when we first decided to come to Michigan. The problem was there were no venues large enough to house the Medical Cannabis Cup (minimum 20,000 sq ') that weren't owned by the University. If you know better please contact me. We loved Detroit but the local police didn't like us.

Take care,
Mary

Any thoughts on a large (20,000 sq ft min) non university owned venue in Ann Arbor?

Folks, Jackson County!

Jackson County is the Emerald Triangle of MI. 15 Dispensaries now, and several back door spots. There are countless warehouses for rent etc. that could handle the event. Blackman Township is technically welcoming cannabis business with open arms. I know Ann Arbor is lax but the event is Medical correct? Jackson County Compassion Club has hosted a booth inside the grand stand building at the county fair. Its likely there largest family event, and they banned rapper "Ludicrous" from preforming due to his "non-family" style music. Point being, medical cannabis is OK in Jackson.

Danny's Hydro World in Jackson was raided by Schuette's people and was back open the same week and has not closed since that I am aware of.
I don't know of a more lenient place for medical marijuana related events, business, and patients/caregivers. Can you? Any thoughts?

Check out the spaces for lease that are listed: http://www.showcase.com/Jackson/Jackson-County__Industrial-Space

Ann arbor's city council is working on legislation to actually regulate and allow dispensaries. Not just looking the other way. They know they are a good thing. A friend of mine was told by an ann arbor cop, off the record of course, you won't see a dispensary raided by ann arbor police.

Hmmm Jackson county is close to Ann Arbor. For some reason I have never made it down there to check out the scene. I guess I just haven't got past Ann Arbor ;-)
