hey folks

after years of inactivity im planing to run a small SOG in 4x8 tent.
Ive used air-cooled 3x400w HPS and 2x600w HPS in the past but would love to try something new.
Mainly to cut on electricity cost and heat issues.

What to choose:

- 2x HLG 550 V2 Rspec (Link)
- 2x Optic 6 COB (Link) or 2x Optic 4 (Link)
- 3x 315w CMH (Papillon)
- 2x Invisible Sun DIY Pro Rig (Link)

So far I kind of want to like the HLG, but their claim of 480w replacing 1k HID is not going well with me.
On the other hand Optic 6 and ISH Pro rig claim 600w+ replace 1k HID, which maybe rings more truthful to me.
CMH are for now the one Im aiming at, but still dont know how much heat they produce, considering they are not air cooled.

Ive searched forums for answers but cant find, would love to know:

- Can I air cool CMH lights ? How much heat they produce in a 4x4 or 4x8 tent ?
- Is HLG 480w = 1k HID claim marketing statement or a fact ? (any grow journals ?)
- How much heat does Optic 6 produce ? I know its another brands re-badge, spare me on that one. Can Optic 4 really replace 2x600w HPS ?
- Anyone ever heard of that last one ? Invisible Sun DIY Pro rig.

Thanks

How is 8x4 a small sog?
I love sog grows so I can't wait. I'd do a 8x4 strip build personally,(2 4x4, 4 2x4) but yeah if that's not an option I'd go with the biggest physical footprint, ie. Most light above each plant. Not familiar with any of these 3 lights you have

As far as the HLG550 replacing a 1000w singe bulb hps, I believe its based on light output and not coverage.
But for sure 2 of them will easily light up a 8x4 without any problems. Will out perform two 600w hps.

I wouldn't go with the 3x 315cmh , the coverage doesn't lend well to your space at all.
You could go with 2x 630 cmh. Air cooling will depend on which brand you get, not seen anyone trying it, obviously there would be some loss due to glass.

Is 2x 315 cmh better than 1x 630w ?I mean I see some 630w CMH kits, you look closer, you see it has actually 2x bulbs.

Relatively speaking

@coreywebster
Id really like to keep it under 1kw for this tent, Im afraid to get 2x 630s.

Whats the state with COBs these days, no one speaks of them anymore or is it just me, its all about cmh, leds and qbs.
Am I really gonna have to buy each one of those and test them myself ??
I have all those lights bar the 630 which I haven't tried, I don't think there's a negative to using 2x 315 in one reflector. I might be wrong but the true 630s are double ended , maybe it outperforms 2x 315s.

COBs are still awesome, the problem specifically for me been a European is getting Heat sinks is a pain in the ass and makes COB builds a lot more expensive, especially if you want to build a big set up ran soft. With boards and especially strips they are so readily available they can be run real soft and heat sinked minimally. Strips builds can be done for like 50 cents a watt

Plus people follow trends and QBs really took off well.

If you want to stay under 1k of power then stay away from cmh , there is just no way to light 8x4 properly with 3 lights capable of covering 27square feet. I feel its a shame to rule them out though for the sake of a few hundred watts.

Even if Id go for 2x630w Im still afraid it might get to hot in the tent, thats my main concern.

Maybe I should just try with classih 600w HPS half a tent and other half with HLG/COB/CMH.

Ill try to find some EU online store with 630w CMH and in case its not what Im looking for I return it.

...or just do a sealed grow room...

OK so I bought Optic 6 and Dimlux 630w CMH system. Will test them for temps pretty soon in a tent and report to my fellow potgrowers here.

Was pleasantly surprised by Optic, how solid built it is, quiet and strong lights. Quite heavy also, 9.5kg.

I like those ish builds, the one you linked looks sweet, but 2 of them would be 1200? Those 2 dimmed, or even re-spread the boards a bit if it lends itself to taking apart. Ish are interesting cause afaik they use 90 cri which has more red and far red which seems to flower better.

Also i think you should consider 2 x cmh in batwing and 3 of any bar type light, for example fotop boards.

It's a no brainer 2 x HLG 550 Rspecs all the way, HLG Quantum Board technology (same tech that's on 550 Rspec) is proven and plenty of journals here to back it up
