Plants don't see the purple light the way human eyes do. Plants respond to a light source and it doesn't seem to matter what that light source is as long as the photons are there and the plants have a chance to get used to the Gestalt of the growing conditions. Therefore, we can't really judge what we think the plant response will be from a spectrum because it looks purple to us. And whenever there are these comparative tests, we are almost ALWAYS dealing with first-generation plants relative to the competitive growing conditions.

Get the right plants and provide premium growing conditions for them, and any of the several lights available today will give good results. I can grow some pretty killer heirloom tomatoes in my garden and I have a limited amount of light for a good part of the day due to some gigantic trees in the neighborhood....but I've been saving my seed and regrowing them each season, so they are "imprinted" with the adaptive information for their specific growing conditions. Some of my other neighbors get GREAT light in their garden, but they can't compete with my tomatoes.They usually buy their starts from a nursery. Light is only a part of the formula for successful growing. Genetics are THE thing though.

I mean....I'm looking forward to seeing what happens, but I won't take it as any kind of specific indicator that one light will get better results than the other one -based on the the different ways that different genetics will respond on a first-generation under a specific set of specific conditions.

Would have thought a “ similar “ panel .... kind k5 , mars pro II Cree , electric sky or
even a vipar v1200.... or a dozen similar ones would be “ closer “ in design and variables.

Even a chilLed panel.

There are many companies still building the enclosed case ( fan cooled ) design.

One variable that hasn’t been addressed is that HLG boards can have lenses attached
which can probably change some of the spread and focus of light.

Arent the reflectors/lens for the QBs for like open areas. Like open rooms. I dont think youd want them on in a tent, with reflective sides. I think it would cause hot spots across the canopy.

Yes but was thinking out loud about lens free smc vs lensed chips .
I never liked the “ glue on “ option of the ledil offerings , but know that it can really rope in the footprint.

And why not do an actual comparison of like built panels instead of competing with a panel that will have definite losses from the start ..... from the cooling ( active ) , driver losses , heat , efficiency, actual pull , etc.

I am betting those fans are less quality sleeve bearing ( comp fans ) , drivers ( I’m thinking 80 percenters ) , heatsink ( fin spacing / height / thickness ) , TIM ( mars looked like toothpaste ) , board quality ... ( does a string go shit or just a single led ? ) .....

I believe HLG has the advantage by form factor alone ..... open passive cooling , latest bin , meanwell drivers and uniform spread .... An A type driver with the quantum and its balls to the wall throughout test . Instead of over a panel with Louvers sliced on the sides for heat.

You can put flames on a fiat , but it’s a still a fucking fiat.
( I’m high ... only example I could think of ... lol )

Even a platinum P 900 .... Same claims , same chest pounding, Same Disco .

Then we can watch SPARTA

You can't build a superior light with inferior components.

There was a whole other thread with voting on different HGL Vs options.
The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of HGL V HLG.
Probably 95% voted to see that side by side.

It's not that the plants want the green as much as that it bounces around like a motherfucker, and will get you more penetration (similar to how od HPS would shift green).
Also it also signals lower leaves not to perspire as much... under 200PAR there is still respiration but no useful photosynthesis.

Even with old blurple LEDs made leaves grow further into the canopy and stay green. Trimming some leaves in early flower right now just to make LST do its thing.

It seems you like to speculate about one brand while turning a blind eye to the inefficiencies of the other. I mean how did you conclude the light had drivers that are only 80% efficient? Or that the fans aren’t ball bearing? Do you have any testing documenting this or you’re just trying to put down a product it seems you have no experience with? And what about spectrum, why aren’t the inefficiencies of white LEDs being mentioned?

You put one product down for having a heat sink, then praise the other for “open passive cooling” despite the fact it has no heat sink? Without a heat sink those passive cooled lights are probably running about 80-100F hotter than the actively cooled lights you’re comparing to. Can someone who is running one of these HLG 550’s do a heat gun rating of that thin sheet of aluminum you call passive cooling? @OneHitDone showed what his light is doing as far as temps are concerned, and it’s running 5-10F hotter than ambient. Most people know that the hotter the temp, the lower your output and faster your light decay, which would put the panel you’re praising at a disadvantage.

There is a little temperature trick way too few growers know.
Run your room cold the first week of flower (some say 4 days), and it will stack on the purples and other colours for the rest of the grow.
