3' wide x 2' deep is 105 gallons so I've been told. Which makes sense bc my 100 gallon fuel tank is about that size. Not sure how to get 25 gallons but I'm sure there is a formula on google for calculating capacity of a cylinder.

I'm no pro but from my past experience the roots seem to go more wide than down.

You gotta do the math. ,, But 21" x16.5" is 25 gallons.

Here ya go..

To calculate how many gallons your containers will hold you'll need to:
Calculate the Cubic inches of the container, then multiply the number of cubic inches by 0.004329 to covert cubic inches to gallons.

Step 1, Calculate the cubic inches:

For square or rectangular containers use (Height in inches) x (Width in inches) x (Depth in inches).

For cylindrical containers, use the following formula: (Average radius in inches Squared) x (Height in inches) x 3.14.

NOTE: the radius squared is NOT the same thing as the diameter.
A container with a Diameter of 10 inches, has a radius of 5 inches. 5 squared, (5 times itself) is 25.

Step 2, Take the number of Cubic inches and multiply by: 0.004329

For example, a cylidrical container that is 10" x 5" X 10" tall:
average radius squared= 14.06 inches (the average diameter is 7.5, half of that is 3.75, 3.75X3.75=14.06)
X height in inches=10 X 14.06= 140.6
X 3.14= 441.484 Cubic inches
X 0.004329= 1.9 gallons.

Another method would be to fill one gallon jugs with water and pour them into your container until it is full. Count the number of jugs added, and that should be how many gallons of soil your container holds. If your container already has holes in the bottom of it, line it with a plastic garbage bag before filling with water. <<< Or if it is a hole in the ground you can do the same.

You gotta do the math. Can't remember the formula,,, But 21" x16.5" is 25 gallons.
So twenty one inches from side to side cross the top both ways by 16.5 inches down will give me a 25 gallon hole

The formula is above. It depends if your using a round pot or a square pot. Also for other reference and sizes etc.. Just look up planter pot sizes , find the ones with 25gal planter/pot sizes and they will give you the dimensions..

Actually here ya go, even better ;). >>> click or copy n paste into browser >>>.

Math. I love it. I try to do 32" wide and 24" deep holes.

Radius X radius X 3.14159 X depth / 231

16 X 16 X 3.14159 X 24 / 231 = 83.55 gallons

You could get away with 14 or 16 inches deep, but don't try to scrimp on width.
