Home made carbon filter

I needed a dust and odor filter for my 6 inch 1000 watt light hood and was broke. I took two strips of sheet metal and bend them into circle that would slide over the light hood outlet and they were then tack welded together.IMG_0607.jpgIMG_0608.jpg Since most people don't have access to a welder; I would recommend using a drill and rivets to attach the metal, screws would also work but leave the tips sticking out in the inside. I used 1/4" metal screening to make the main air intake body of the filter. A 6 inch end cap from Home Depot was placed and taped onto the end to complete the seal. I then stretched a pantyhose leg over the filter for dust protection.IMG_0619.jpgIMG_0621.jpg I purchased a Humidifier carbon wrap filter from Home Depot,IMG_0622.jpg cut it to size and wrapped it around the filter.IMG_0623.jpg I then just slipped it over the hood duct outlet and presto.IMG_0624.jpg This has reduced dust intake to my light hoods by 95% and eliminated about 98% of detectable odor coming out of the exhaust air. The most expensive piece was the carbon humidifier filter at $18.00 and it came with enough to wrap it twice or replace it once. The whole thing cost about $30.00 including the pantyhose, which of course also came in a set of two. I posted this for a friend but I hope it helps some more of you out too.
