Homeless in paradise

People like to think of Hawaii as paradise, and for the most part, it is. But for some, the cost of living is just too great. People have no other choice but to live on the streets. This has been going on for years. Certain areas/parks/beaches are known for homeless.

Recently, however, the city and county/ state have been cracking down on homeless and forcing them out of these areas. So the homeless just keep moving down the coast. Maybe a month or so, the process will repeat. They will get kicked out and move down to the next beach. Keep in mind, there are some homeless shelters but some of the homeless refuse to go because of rules (no drugs, alcohol, etc.) I think that others just enjoy life on the beach without having to pay $millions for beach front property ( who wouldn't :) )The sad part is that many of the homeless are families with young children.

And what's funny is that there have been cases where other states have shipped their homeless out to Hawaii.

So what should be done? Keep kicking them out until they have nowhere to go? Leave them be? Jail? Ship them back to the continental us?

I know of the poverty in Hawaii.

The answer is always to adapt the communities to accept everyone but we don't do that.
Are there any family aid organizations people can donate to?
I know we all have people in our own communities sleeping on side walks and under over hangs.
The sad part is there is housing for all but we lock people out.

Perhaps we all need to think more about life than oil.

We don't have many homeless folks. Either they have a good 4 season tent or they get out of the state.

A few freeze to death every year. Almost all of these deaths are caused by alcohol overconsumption.

give them the want ads and tell them to get jobs or an education. But thats easy for me, college educated, white, upper class parents, republican. Thats why I like this part of Michigan there are no homeless because they would freeze to death in the winter, they all go down south.

Just what do Alaska and Michigan have to do with Hawaii?

I'm failing to connect the dots.

we dont want your homeless, thats what it has to do with us.
plus shipping them back infers that they came from the mainland. I think they were homeless when they got there

So you are hunting the homeless not homelessness.
That this is a thread about Hawaii and it's long standing mass of people living below poverty but that doesn't mater because there are some pesky Homeless folks to go after? Am I right?

There have been many cases of OTHER states paying for one way tickets to Hawaii and giving them to THEIR homeless. They ship them here. Also, many of the homeless are veterans. I don't think they are lazy freeloaders. Some of the homeless have jobs you know.

I know of the poverty since in 1979 a girl most of us high school boys wanted desperatly to have sex with moved with her Mom and Sister to Hawaii and their Mothers Boy friend.
Lisa Casebeer I am not joking on the last name. That was her last name.

I kept up with Lisa through the early 90's and she told me how it went from bad to worse with the jobs and the costs.
I lost contact so I don't know how it turned out but the last thing I knew she and a friend were sharing a two bedroom. Between them there were 6 children and three adults and they were very poor.
I understood this wasn't uncommon for many.

Really? They ship people to Hawaii?

I was just watching that some employment centers are telling their people to leave the State. On PBS.

I don't want this to be a thread about how homeless people are lazy freeloaders. Some of them may be responsible for their situation, some of them even like how they live, but some are homeless through no fault of their own.

I just want ideas on how to help with the homeless epidemic. Some say let them have an area to themselves like a camp or something (which they do, they just keep getting kicked out by cops) Others say get them off of state land and think they will just dissapear :wall: Is there any real solution?

Yeah there is but it requires a cap on private wealth.

My opinion is that above some amount wealth is the domain of the planet. The plante is more an organism than a business and we are like an infection.

Until we go back to simpler ways the Earth will slowly lose it's unique status.

Maybe homeless people just really really like the outdoors.

they did a big study of homeless in San Diego, spent $200,000 per individual over a 4 year period, at the end of the study all the homeless were still homeless. Even after being given apartments and food.

What is it with you and capping wealth? You don't seem to understand that eventually inflation will make that cap very easy to reach. Besides, it won't work, even if you took every private persons wealth and all the corporations profits you still couldn't balance the budget.

I agree with this for some of the homeless. They live right on the beach and catch fish for food. You could say they live off the land like the ancient Hawaiians once did. This certain group of homeless like how they live. But people complain about rampant drug use, which I won't deny. The beaches also become cluttered with garbage and whatnot. I don't think it's entirely the homeless peoples fault though. People view certain beaches as homeless camps and just use them as dumps.

But for those with kids who want to get off the street/beach, it's still difficult because the homeless shelters are nearly filled to capacity. And of course, you have chronics/iceheads/addicts. I think they hurt the image of being homeless the most. They steal, rob, etc. They don't clean and are really sketch. That's why I really hate when people get hooked on ICE. They just do anything and everything to get it. It breaks families apart and that's what breaks my heart. When kids steal from their parents/friends just to get ice. My friend maryjane always gets a bad rap but she does nothing wrong :leaf:

Yeah, to afford the rent/mortgage it's not uncommon for people to have extended families living in a single home/apartment. Lots of people have two jobs.
