A small insult by an insect is all it takes to introduce bacteria/fungi. Like you said it's on the less sunny side of the street too.

Is it not worth the risk? Were I to cut it, is what's on it salvageable to trim and dry, or compost?

It would be super unripe at this point, I don't think it would be very useful if you cut it now. You definitely need to tape it, it is freshly tearing away. Tough call.
I have only had that a couple of times. It hurts, but I removed the infected part and the rest of the plant was unaffected. Yes, you can try to salvage any buds that are removed, for hash or smoke, but I would throw away the infected part and not compost it. You could also try to use some hydrogen peroxide on it and see if that helps, and then remove it if it doesn't improve. One of the nice things about large plants is that there is still a lot of buds left if you lose part of it.

The size of those plants I'd probably just kill that branch but I've been known to take out the main cola on a smaller indoor plant because it was unmanageably annoying. So ymmv. Right now so close harvest is the tricky part in challenging weather with a monster plant. I grow indoors. I'm also more on the cautious side. I'll be sending good thoughts your way.

It's a sad branch to lose. I'm looking at all the other stem nodes and not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Maybe this branch had begun to fail before the storm. Can I take a sterile scalpel and remove some brown stuff, to put clean flesh against clean flesh to seal the wound?

We use sharp debridement in medicine and it works. It's worth a try. I wouldn't worry too much about scalpel sterility as after the first cut you'll be contaminated. Just clean a blade or use a new one then disinfect the area vigorously after removal. But the fungus is all around you in the environment. I might try hitting it with sulphur but that's from medicine. I'd say your intuition is more valid than mine at this point as you got them to here and you seem to have a good feel for growing. But shnk and mando all know more than I do for what you're doing and where you're doing it.

Looks like it had possibly been failing for a short time (either from pest or just too large/peeling away) and the weather put it over the edge. You can try and repair it/splint or I’d simply remove and compost. Nothing is worth smoking at this stage and I wouldn’t waste my time using it for hash/edibles yet. But as stated ymmv.

looks like it has some rot. may not mend together.
give it a shot though, just the same.
i think curious2garden is on to something with trying to remove/debride the mold before sticking them back together.

I had a friend treat a worse looking stem rot with sulfur and claimed he was successful, I believe him, but I never saw the result in person.

24 hours of off and on rain, that's all it took, and now my San marzanos have septoria. Insane. They were the picture of health a mere day ago. My anxiety is climbing. I went around to as many laden branches as I could on my girls and shook them to shed the excess water trapped in the flowers. I'm tempted to try pulling row covering over them somehow. Invasive thoughts telling me to get the extension cord and my hair dryer out to the garden. Thin tarp? Ugh. It's only misting right now but in a few hours it's gonna rain sideways until dark.

Welcome, nice to see more of us! Next year we should have a thread or something for Minnesota folks. If there isn't one elsewhere, this thread is fine for that too. When did you plant yours? Looks like you went with pots. I'm really pleased with generating a colossus, however next year I may employ various methods to moderate size.
Honestly, in reflection, there are many things I will do differently next year. I'm still learning as I go, but the biggest lesson I've learned so far is, if you encourage it cannabis will grow like unto a cotton wood tree. The internet led me to believe, in my naivety, that cannabis only gets about 2 feet tall if you're lucky. So I tried to set myself up for the best ever 2 footers, if I was real lucky. Instead I set myself up for 9 footers. They're maybe too big. I can't care for them effectively after a certain size, it gets overwhelming and I'm only 5'5.

I don't really do Facebook but I found a Minnesota growers page which is chock full of new growers, good bad and indifferent It's like G rated Rollitup. As soon as I joined it took over my fb feed lol. A lot of blind leading the blind. Pretty good entertainment!

I like plants a little smaller too. So much mold and humidity problems in Michigan. It's hard to get them sprayed thoroughly.

There's still plenty of time to capitalize on what's still developing before frost. If I was gonna get septoria, this late in the season is ... fine, I guess. This is from a couple days ago. 
Getting septoria on your cannabis this late in the season won't do a thing to them. Mine started in early July and almost all the plants made some pretty good flowers.

Aside from my broken branch incident which, by the way, I don't think is gonna heal, the plants look perfect health. Here is a picture from my studio window. The new supports seem to be doing their jobs.

Thank you!! Its my first time with auto plants.. they are small but fierce! I have had my ups and downs with these myself but its been a great learning year. There's not much to harvest on these ( maybe a couple ounces dry) so a little less frustrating when I ruin one 
I have only grew bag seeds in the woods before this year so its been fun being able to grow a little more freely and exploring nutrients and such. I did go with pots because we have a crazy amount of pocket gophers that love the roots from our veggies so I figured it would be the same with these ladies (even put them on pallets to get them off the ground 
) we're going large greenhouse next year, I also had a few seeds in mine. We have a ton of wild hemp around and I think that was the culprit. Only a few seeds but I was definitely surprised/saddened to see them. I am excited to see how your photoperiod gorillas do that you have posted, they look like they will supply you with some high caliber smoke! 
just pulled the first "test plant" nug out of the jar.... looking good
