How bad is the heat on a 400 hps

I asked this question but I felt it'd be better off with a thread for it.

I've a closet about 3x5x9 and the bedroom is your typical size. Now exactly how BAD is the heat that this thing generates? I mean, when I head to the college during the day and someone looses their mind and bothers to walk in my room, and it's a 10 degree difference, they're going to sense somethings up.

Is it that bad or what? What can I do to minimize the heat coming off it?

Go with an enclosed glass reflector and vent the air into the main room and you'll never tell the temp difference. I'm using a 400hps in a standard wardrobe closet like you mentioned. No problems at all.

A 400w hps is ideal for your grow area. I wouldnt say there's alot of heat but there's some heat, you can keep the light about 12-18 inches away from the top of the plants. :joint::peace::peace::peace:

good luck.

The hps will be in the closet correct? If so it wont be too bad at all out in the bedroom. I have a 400 in a closet a little smaller than that that I use to veg and if the closet door is closed theres not much of any heat difference at all. The closet door may feel a little warm to the touch though. Having a fan in their moving the air around some should help as well.

Well a 400w lamp can get very hot and does generate heat most these days are within a tube with a fan blowing to cool the lamp and allow it to be placed closer to plants etc.

If you have a 400w lamp you need to cool it sufficiently or better still good ventilation otherwise you will have problems if not you could play safe and go with a envirolite instead.

well, what i was goin to do, is -

small fan blowing on the light/reflector
small fan at bottom of the closet slide sucking the air from the closet and blowing it into my room.

from the answers though, it seems I shouldn't have any problem. I was just hoping to god someone wouldn't come in here and tell me it's like a mini sun in your closet and i'd have to run duct work from the closet to my window.

hella obvious

If you don't vent directly from the reflector then you'll probably need a fan at the highest point to pull hot air out of the closet. What kind of door(s) are on the closet?

Thats what i started out with and eventually changed it, but if you can run a 1x6 vertically in-line with the doors (it will make the opening smaller) but it will give you a chance to make holes and vent into the room

Yes a fan blowing on or just under the lamp will help to get the full benefit of the lumens it can give you, you need it as close to the plants as you can.

Otherwise for the 400w your losing money if you can't use it to its full effect, go with a envirolite which does not have the same issue's hope this helps, KB :blsmoke:

Just some idiot
A 400 watt is not super hot, from what you plan on doing I would say go for it. Floros are OK IMO but nothing matches the HPS flower power....good luck.
