How cold is to cold?

So ive got seeds I planted wednesday (after soaking 24 hrs) , their in my shed under 1 135watt cfl at the moment. Still no sign of shoots.

its 49° F outside at moment and im assuming as its a foot long bulb the heat is heating the plants somewhat.

ive ordered another 135 watt bulb that should be here tuesday.

are they likely to be dead or just slow growing? Do I give up now or give it a few more days yet, especially once ive fitted the second light?

Ive chosen the wrong season I think to start a new hobby :(

I think I'll just suck it up put another light in tuesday and give up end of week if nothings appeared, at night its dropping to low 40s F . I'll try again at end of month when I can afford a proper grow tent, should be better insulated against the cold that my current reflective panels wedged around the plant pots (light about 4 inches above) effort.

Great news!

Almost gave up but yesterday bought the pots in and placed by a morning sun window with a radiator underneath and I have a shoot!

Now to keep it alive till end of month when im getting my grow tent and 400w hps.

I like to germ my seeds in room temp of about 80-87 or so. anything above 60 or so will work, but warmer will speed the process.

hopefully another seed or 3 will pop in the next day or so, if not it would suck if my only sprouted seed was a male :-/ Until the end of the month im going to macguyver a cardboard box (big box) into a mini grow room for these seedlings and keep it indoors, as long as the cfl doesn't touch the box id imagine it wont spontaneously ignite. Come end of month i'll set up the tent in my shed and maybe by April i'll have some bud :) Anyway the whole thing has been a learning experience, worst comes to worst i'll just start again with some feminized seeds once tent and light are up.

Obviously what is happening outside the shed is important as far as temps go but not as important as whats happening inside where your plants are at. Can you afford a small thermostatically controlled electric heater? They sell them everywhere...walmart, lowes, homedepot ETC....Cost about $40.00 dollars and your gonna need it anyway down the road when you switch the plants to 12/12. As long as the lights are on you will probably be fine...but as soon as the timer kicks off and lights go out, so does your heat source, so you will need to heat up that space somehow and I still think you might need supplimental heat even when your lights are on....Those CFL's will not generate allot of heat...especially now in the dead of winter. Lowes sells a nice 42 inch electric base board free standing heater...its made by Lasko. Digital control settings and t-stat controlled. That would take care of your problem. You will have to expierment with the settings until you dial your desired temp in but once you do that, your in like flynn!!!

If you want to continue to grow....your going to need a heater. Also keep in mind that those heaters draw 12 to 1500 watts, which is already close to a full load for one circut. With the heater and a couple of lights you will be close to the threshold of any one circut your pulling power from. I assume that your running power from a extention cord....correct?? If thats the case, make sure that your using a nice heavy extension cord so that it can handle the draw down on the run. Dont use a shitty cheap thin cord to pull power...it could get hot on you and could create other problems...LIKE FIRE!! Whatever you do, do not over load the circut you are pulling power from. If you have to...run another cord from a seperate circut as not to overload one circut. Good luck!!
