Depends on strain and size alot but I'd say if there is frost then thats probably not too good...Good growing

What can you use to cover it to keep it warmer? Also, would I have to dig a little hole in the ground or could I take store-bought soil and just pat it down and put the seed in there?

Side by side, my Sativa did better than my Indica.
An occasional night of 40 was fine, but after a week of 40's, the Indica got a K lockout from the cold.
I had some leaves turn black, dry out and fall off, but the Sativa just got some of the sugar leaves turning.
HOWEVER, the growth on both of them, slowed down a bunch.

You can cover the plant with a large garbage bag, if it will fit, but mostly from what I hear, keeping the rots warmer is what you should worry more about.
Watering before a cold night, mulching will insulate.

when daytime temps get below 70 things start to slow a bunch. I still have a sativa out and haven't seen 70 in over a week. Not sure it's going to finish before it freezes. indica's are all but done curing.
